Wolves Knock Out Knicks Early

Mike Trudell
Wolves Reporter

Saturday evening's NBA contest between Minnesota and New York was the antithesis of NCAA Big Dance nail-biters like Western Kentucky-Drake, Marquette-Stanford or San Diego-UCONN.

In other words, it was over early, as the Wolves emerged from Target Center with a 114-93 victory. The Timberwolves barely missed a shot in the first quarter of Saturday evening's contest, scoring a season-high 42 points on 17-of-23 shooting to bury a Knicks team that would trail by as many as 23 and never really threaten Minnesota's lead.

It was a night full of season highs for Minnesota: 69 first-half points; 42 first-quarter points; 29 assists (tying the previous high); nine assists for Randy Foye; six assists for Al Jefferson; eight boards for Kirk Snyder ... You get the point.

Clearly, the nature of the game lent itself to a numbers summary:

3
Blocks for Al Jefferson, giving him 13 in his last four games.

4
Minutes for Mark Madsen, much to the pleasure of the Target Center faithful. Entering near the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter, with the Wolves up 109-91, Mad Dog provided his usual energy for the first minute, then missed a shot in the lane in transition. However, Dog grabbed his own board, and was fouled on the way up. Madsen converted 1-of-2 for his first point since Dec. 22 against New Orleans.

6
Assists for Al Jefferson in the first three quarters, a new individual season-high for dimes.

7.3
Rebounds averaged by Randy Foye in his last four games, including two in double-digits. Carmelo Anthony of Denver averages 7.3 boards on the year, which is 37th in the NBA. Should Foye keep that rebounding pace up, only Jason Kidd (7.7) would average more boards from a guard position. Foye did only clean the glass twice on Saturday, however.

11
Minnesota's edge on the glass (44-33).

16
Minutes it took the Wolves to hit the 50-point plateau, on a Rashad McCants three. McCants came off the bench to hit 6-of-8 shots for 13 points through the eight-minute mark of the second quarter, and he scored 20 in the first half on 9-of-13 shooting, but just four in the second on 1-of-6 from the field.

25
Points scored by Minnesota in the game's first seven minutes, behind 10-of-13 shooting (77 percent). All five Wolves starters, plus Corey Brewer off the bench, had at least two points.

25
Fastbreak points for the Wolves, vs. just four for the Knicks.

42
Points scored by Minnesota in the first quarter, the most the Wolves had scored in any quarter all season. The previous high for a quarter was 40 (twice), while the previous first-quarter high was 33 (@ G.S., Jan. 21).

46.0
Total points averaged by New York's starting lineup, compared with 59.3 points for that of Minnesota.

69
First-half points for the Timberwolves, a new season-high. Minnesota did score 71 points in the second half against Indiana on Dec. 21.

100
Fantasy points Randy Foye was on pace for after a huge first quarter. In standard point leagues, players are awarded two fantasy points for each rebound, steal, block and assist, and one per point. Foye had seven points, four assists, three steals and two boards, a.k.a. 25 fantasy points. For some perspective, the NBA's best fantasy player, LeBron James, averages 67.7 points a night, eight more than Dwight Howard.

Infinity
Games in a row that Ryan Gomes has been left wide open on the first play of the game, as the other team generally focuses on Al Jefferson. Gomes took advantage on Sunday by driving to the rack and laying it in off the glass for the game's first points.
