Wolves Draft Nikola Pekovic at No. 31


The Minnesota Timberwolves tonight selected Nikola Pekovic in the second round (31st pick overall) of the 2008 NBA Draft. Pekovic, a 22-year-old, 6-11 center from Montenegro, averaged 16.4 points per game during the 2007-08 Euroleague season for Partizan Belgrade (Serbia).

In 2007-08, Pekovic averaged 15.2 points and 5.5 rebounds for Partizan Belgrade in Europe's Adriatic League. He scored 20 or more points on eight occasions, including a career high of 33 points and 11 rebounds. Pekovic was named MVP of the 2008 Adriatic League Final Four as Partizan became the first team to win back-to-back Adriatic League Championships. Pekovic also earned the Adriatic League All-Star Game MVP award after a 26-point, eight-rebound performance. In the 2007-08 Euroleague season, Pekovic averaged 16.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game for Partizan en route to being named to the All-Euroleague Second Team.

The Timberwolves also drafted guard Mario Chalmers from Kansas with the 34th overall pick (second round). The Wolves traded his draft rights to the Miami Heat in exchange for two 2009 second-round draft picks and cash considerations.
