Wolves Continue Preseason in Denver

By contributing writer John Focke
Tonight the Minnesota Timberwolves continue their preseason road trip at the Pepsi Center in Denver as they square off against the Nuggets.

Minnesota improved to 2-0 in the preseason after knocking off the Okalahoma City Thunder Wed 88-82 in Billings Montana. That win came on the heels of the Wolves 117-79 win at Milwaukee Monday to open the preseason.

In both games, Rashad McCants has led Minnesota in scoring. Wednesday he poured in 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter before fouling out. Minnesota's offense appears to be coming along nicely as the team is averaging 102 points a game this preseason.

During training camp in Mankato, forward Corey Brewer said he knows Minnesota can play offense but they are going to have to pick it up on the defensive end this season, "Last year we were terrible at defense, so we're trying to make our defense better (this year). We can play good offense but if we can play some defense we're gonna win some games."

Already you can see the emphasis on defense paying off as the Wolves held Milwaukee to 33.8% shooting, while the Thunder shot just 41.7%

One area Coach Randy Wittman wants to see his team continue to improve is transition defense, saying after practice Tuesday that he wants to see how his team does against two teams (Oklahoma and Denver) who can run and put up a lot of points.

Tonight marks the first preseason game for the Nuggets who earlier this week signed Juwan Howard to their training camp roster. Last year Howard was with the Wolves during training camp and preseason but had his contract bought out before the start of the regular season.

Howard is now in his second stint with the Nuggets having played in 105 games with the team from 2002-2003 when he averaged 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds. Howard will look to fill Denver's hole in the middle after trading Marcus Camby to the Clippers this offseason.

This season the Nuggets will once again lean on the scoring of Allen Iverson, who averaged 26.4 points per game last season, and Carmelo Anthony who poured in 25.7 points a game, and will look to pick things up on the defensive end of the floor as they gave up 114 points a game last season.

Notes-
The Wolves are 72-70 all time in preseason games and 2-0 on the road this season
Wednesday's game in Billings, Montana was considered a home game for Minnesota.
The Timberwolves play 6 of their first 8 preseason games on the road. They play the last two-preseason games at Target Center and open with back-to-back games at home as well.
