What’s up, Gomes?
Admittedly, Ryan Gomes isn't the world's best golfer. His still-developing game is expectedly more about bogies than birdies, as several U.S. Bank employees and clients learned during a scramble tournament at Willmar's Eagle Creek Golf Club as part of the Wolves Caravan.
Though Gomes claimed to be a far superior golfer to his buddy, Corey Brewer, his three shots that landed in various bodies of water around the course said otherwise.
But of course ... Gomes isn't a golfer. He plays hoops, and he's pretty good at that game.
Last year in Minnesota, the 6-8 forward proved himself a valuable commodity as one of the league's best glue guys, even in his youth: He averaged 12.6 points, 5.8 boards and started 74 of 82 games played for the Wolves. Gomes remains one of two restricted free agents* left unsigned by the Timberwolves after Sebastian Telfair and Craig Smith inked deals in the past two weeks. It's clear that Gomes is the top priority for Minnesota's basketball operations staff, which is currently engaged in negotiations with the former Providence star's agent.
*Because he is restricted, any offer Gomes gets from another team can be matched by Minnesota.
Interestingly, Gomes has yet to sign the contract tender extended by the Wolves as he and his agent do their due diligence in exploring the market ... Yet he's is on the Caravan? That's just how the former Boston Celtics' Community star of the year rolls.
"To show you the type of person he is, Ryan is on the Minnesota Timberwolves Caravan and he's not even under contract," said Wolves VP of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale at Wednesday's Wolves press conference. "I can tell you, there are very few people that would be doing that. That's another reason why we're very fond of these guys and think they're special kids."
We're not trying to blow too much smoke at Gomes, but seriously ... How many professionals, let alone pro athletes, would agree to do a community appearance with their future with that organization up in the air?
Not too many. Right?
We sat down with Gomes after his round of golf on the way to Brainerd from Willmar. Here's what he had to say:
