Vikings Invade Taget Center

By: Contributing Writer Jude Harder

Several Vikings players were in attendance at the Wolves season opener against the Nuggets on Friday night. Scattered throughout the Target Center, some chose to sit up close and personal with the Lexus Courtside Club seats while others went with the laid back but lively Club Cambria seating experience.

The NFL's new single-game rushing record holder Adrian Peterson sat in the Lexus Courtside seats along with rookie wide receiver Sidney Rice, who also opened some eyes with his performance on Sunday, offensive lineman Anthony Herrera and safety Dwight Smith. Spotted in Club Cambria were defensive lineman Pat Williams, quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and offensive tackle Marcus Johnson. Mammoth offensive lineman Bryant McKinnie, safety Darren Sharper and many others were also in the house.

Here are a few comments from some of the Vikings players on the young and energetic Wolves, their first-class seating arrangement at the Target Center and the Vikings Sunday showdown with L.T. and the Chargers.

Offensive lineman Anthony Herrera
Q: On the excellent start by the Wolves in the first quarter:
A: I love it so far. It’s exciting to see the first game of the season and to see the team come out with a fast start like this.

Q: On his predictions for the season:
A: Hopefully, not speaking bad about anybody, but a little bit better than last year. I’m a big fan. We’ve got a lot of young talent and it looks like we're going to be all right for the future.

Q: On the atmosphere at the Target Center:
A: I’ve always been a supporter of the Timberwolves. I love the basketball team over here. I love it.

Q: On the match-up on Sunday with the Chargers:
A: We’ve been practicing and working hard this week. We’re going to go out there on Sunday and do what we’ve got to do and take care of business.

Safety Dwight Smith
Q: On if he was surprised by the early run by the Wolves:
A: No. When you get a bunch of young guys together you expect to see exciting basketball. We all knew Rashad McCants could play. It’s all about confidence when you get to this level because everybody’s basically the same talent.

Q: On the ESPN predictions of us finishing last in the division:
A: I honestly don’t see that. I know a couple of guys on the team and they’ve got too much pride out there to finish last. A lot of people underestimate Al Jefferson. I figure next year they most likely go to the playoffs.

Q: On his love for the game of basketball and the coming to Wolves games:
A: I try to get tickets for any game that I’m in town for. I might as well be a season ticket holder. I’m a basketball fanatic. We won a state championship when I was in high school.

Defensive lineman Pat Williams
Q: On his thoughts on the first half:
A: It’s going good. Everybody’s is new this year. They’re playing good though, I think they’re going to be all right this year.

Q: On his Club Cambria seating:
A: It’s nice up here, the view is great. There are a lot of good festivities up here. Everybody’s real happy right now and everybody’s cheering for them, I’m really cheering for them. Everybody knows it’s a new squad and a new environment.

Q: On who is favorite player is on the new look Wolves:
A: I think Al Jefferson is going to be my guy. Him and Randy Foye I would have to say.

Q: On stopping reigning MVP LaDainian Tomlinson on Sunday:
A: I’m not going to worry about it. They’re basically going to come and try to run the ball. If they try, they try. If they don’t, they don’t, but if they try they’ll get stuffed.

Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson
Q: On his thoughts after Denver cut the lead to three at the end of first half:
A: Denver’s got all the veteran players. These guys are out there learning and they weren’t together last year. They’re just trying to get a good feel for each other.

Q: On the youth movement on the Wolves roster:
A: They’ve got a lot of the key pieces and some guys that have a whole bunch of potential. They can be real good just by guys coming together and working together as a team. They’ve got a whole bunch of energy out there.

Q: On who he likes on the team:
A: I watch Florida basketball so I’m a fan of those guys (Chris Richard and Corey Brewer).

It was nice to see the Vikings players return the favor and show their support for their fellow Minnesota professional athletes just like the Wolves did last Sunday when the entire squad attended the Vikings game against the Eagles at the Metrodome. Though the Wolves fell victim to the Nuggets wealth of stardom and experience in the fourth quarter, it was apparent in talking with the Vikings players that they had already made their impression on them with the way they battled the first three quarters. It was a good chance for the Vikings to get acquainted with the new team and to “See What They Can Do” as the slogan goes.
