Smith’s Knee ... And Stuff

Mike Trudell
Wolves Reporter

Craig Smith told us his surgically repaired knee is feeling just fine. While we had him, of course, we had to find out what else is going on in the Rhino's world.

To no one's surprise, he had plenty to offer: from details regarding his future as an actor (X-Men?); his new hair cut (WavyHawk) and his three-point shooting (57 percent).

Craig Conversation

While I'd suggest listening to the Rhino speak to help you fully comprehend the random thoughts, here's a written transcript:

Rhino Talk
Q: On his knee:
Smith: The knee is feeling pretty good. I just have to get my bounce back so I can dunk on guys during the season ... It sucks to have an injury, but it's good that I'll be ready before training camp. I'm going really hard to get my conditioning up so I can be ready for the first day.

Q: On his hair:
Smith: I like it. I call it the "WavyHawk." It relaxes my fade, and let's my hawk be free. Me and one of my other good friends have Mohawks, so we have our hawk talks, and we come with creative words.

Q: On Jefferson coming back from his injury:
Smith: It affects you a lot because you have to get on rhythm with your teammates ... He is going to be well prepared, but it's mostly the conditioning. (It's) being able to stay in shape, because once he comes in they are going to hit him hard, so he has to keep working on his cardio ... Get in and get some work in, but don't put too much on it that it risks another injury.

Q: On random thoughts:
Smith: I don't know if I have anything funny anymore. I'm getting old. My jokes are whack, but my 'Hawk is free. Oh. I did something fun. I did a little experiment. So all the change that I basically had, saved from going to a 711 - which is comparable to a Super America - and (other places), I went to this coin machine, and put all my coins in it to see how much I made. They said they take eight cents out of the dollar, so most likely I'd have made $80, but it was (more like) $68 bucks ... What I bought with it was a DVD of "Looney Tunes." The old-school cartoon.

Q: On acting:
Smith: I'm working on my different acting skills. Last time we talked, we talked about getting a SAG card ... I don't know if everyone knew what I was talking about. It's basically becoming a legitimate actor. You have to have a Screen Actor's Guild card. I'm definitely working on that, even though (Kevin McHale) doesn't want me to. But I'm looking at different types of things, different movies and things like that. That's why I watch so many movies.

Q: On the NBA players in "Van Wilder."
Smith: Yeah but they were just dunking. They said like, two words. I want two lines. I want to be considered as an actor in the acting set, and a basketball player on a basketball set. And Craig Smith when I'm not doing either, just hanging around.

Q: On when his movie career will start:
Smith: Something like (15 years). I don't want to do a lot of movies. I just want to do a couple. Get a feel for it, see how it is.

Q: On his ideal film role:
Smith: Probably in a funny movie, because I'm just goofy and I love being on the set with goofy people. I'd probably be in "Norbit" as one of those big brothers ... I definitely have some glasses that I'm going to bring out this year that definitely has me looking like the black Clark Kent. Superman has a body suit on, and I have my body suit on right now so it works out ... But what about X-Men? A mutant? One of the good guys though.

Q: On movie he's seen this summer:
Smith: I've seen "The Dark Knight" 175 times. I saw "Tropic Thunder" and loved it. It was really funny. I can't get enough of Batman though.

Q: On his shooting:
Smith: My jump shot is getting much better ... I (extend) out to three-point range. NBA. If the opportunity presents itself, (I'll shoot it). If I'm wide open, I'm going to shoot it. I shoot about 57 percent. I'm trying to shoot for one a game.
