Scouting Report: Wolves (28-29) at Kings (20-38) | March 1, 2014

Timberwolves at Kings | 9:00 PM — Sleep Train Arena
Where to Watch: Fox Sports North

Where to Listen: 830 WCCO-AM

You probably already know, but every game from here on out for the Minnesota Timberwolves is incredibly important.

The Wolves sit five games back from the Phoenix Suns for the eighth seed in the Western Conference and a game against the Kings on Saturday night is a game Minnesota needs to win. There are just 25 games remaining and there’s very little room for losses.

The Kings will not be making the postseason this season, having just 20 wins, sitting in second to last place in the West. Sacramento has an odd team, full of talented players, but not players that exactly fit together.

This is a late start, so get the Red Bull ready.

Last Meeting

The Wolves fell to the Kings at home on Jan. 15, 111-108.

Rudy Gay led the Kings with 33 points, shooting 12-of-19 from the field. Isaiah Thomas added 26, while DeMarcus Cousins finished with 20 points and 11 boards. Former Timberwolves forward Derrick Williams had a bench-high 16 points.

Kevin Love led the Wolves with 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Nikola Pekovic, Kevin Martin and J.J. Barea all scored 14 points. Alexey Shved and Corey Brewer had 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Wolves were outrebounded 45-35 in the game.

This Week’s Results

Minnesota is coming off of a 110-101 win over the Suns on Tuesday.

Love led the way for Minnesota with 33 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. Rookie Shabazz Muhammad led Minnesota’s bench with 20 points and six rebounds. Corey Brewer added 18 points, while shooting 7-of-9 from the field. Dante Cunningham and Chase Budinger had 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Wolves shot 48.3 percent from the field.

The Wolves are 4-1 in their last five games.

The Kings are coming off of a 126-122 loss to the Los Angels Lakers last night. Gay led the way with 26 points. Williams and Thomas had 26 points each, while Jason Thompson put up 17 points while filling in for the suspended Cousins.

hat To Watch: Kevin Love vs. DeMarcus Cousins

The mission for the Kings will be the same mission many teams across the NBA haven’t been able to accomplish: Stop Kevin Love.

That’s easier said than done. Love had an incredible month of February and the All-Star starter is averaging a career-high 26.6 points (4th in NBA) and 13.2 rebounds per game (2nd in NBA). He’s also dishing out a career-high 4.1 assists per game.

Cousins sat out of last night’s game due to a suspension, but he’s been pretty great this season as well for the Kings. Cousins is averaging a career-high 22.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. The Wolves hope to have Pekovic back to slow down Cousins. If not, it could be a long night for the Wolves.

Injury Report

Minnesota center Nikola Pekovic (right ankle bursitis) is probable, while shooting guard Kevin Martin (fractured left thumb) is questionable. Center Ronny Turiaf (bone bruise in right knee) is out indefinitely.

The Kings will be without recently acquired guard Jason Terry (knee), who is out for the remainder of the season.
