Randy Wittman Conference Call 10-8

Coach Wittman checked in with Minneapolis reporters, this time from London, England. Minnesota takes on the Boston Celtics this Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

Q: On if he's bumped into Kevin Garnett in London:
A: Not at the hotel. I saw him at practice today, they practice right after we practice, so I got a chance to talk to him for a little bit and see how things are going.

Q: On the team's experience in Turkey:
A: It ended up being a good trip for us. Being the type of game that it was, it couldn't have been a better teaching situation for us and our young guys that played at the end of the game, having to make plays both offensively and defensively in learning situations. It was a great teaching night for us, especially for the five young guys I had in at the end of the game.

Q: On Rashad McCant's health:
A: He practiced today. We'll have another hard practice tomorrow. He went through everything so I'm anticipating that he'll play on Wednesday.

Q: On if the minor injuries have been frustrating for him:
A: I'm sure for him it is. Right now at this point in time we don't want to be messing around with a strained hamstring and pushing him to get out there and play. We've got to make sure he's not doing that to himself either because you don't want another situation to crop up that lingers for months. Today was really the first time he's gone since injuring it. So we'll see in the morning when he gets up how he feels.

Q: On Craig Smith's health:
A: Craig practiced today for the majority of practice. He got out today on some five-on-five live stuff. So with him now we'll see where he is from a point of soreness tomorrow. Probably not going to allow him to practice tomorrow but he practiced today.

Q: On Al Jefferson getting only eight shots vs. Efe's Pilsen:
A: Each game is different. They played a two-three zone all game. A college two-three with no defensive rules. There was not a lot of opportunity inside for Al because of that. Every game is different, but you never go into a game saying a guy is going to get a certain amount of shots. It's just how the defense plays and how you're playing that day. Al did everything he's supposed to do in a game like that, he rebounded, he played defense. He had 17 rebounds and hit the offensive boards good. We'll continue to work obviously as we get back now to familiar territory of playing games with NBA rules, where things will get to be a little more normal for Al.

Q: On Marko Jaric's status:
A: He turned his ankle at Friday's practice and it was sore on Saturday morning when we went to shoot-around, so we held him out. He practiced again today. We gave him the day off on Sunday and today was his first work since then and he did fine.

Q: On Ryan Gomes being a glue-guy:
A: He's that kind of player. He just does all of the little things and is a solid player; he's never going to really do anything spectacular. He was the leader for us on the offensive boards, especially in the first half. In think he had five of his six offensive boards in the first half and four of the five he was able to convert back into baskets. That was an area where we were really lacking as a team last year. I think we ranked 25th in the league in offensive rebounds. We've been preaching through training camp that is going to have to be a stat that needs improvement for us. Him starting at the small forward position really gave us a big lift from that standpoint.

Q: On having a big rebounding edge on Saturday:
A: Again, they played zone pretty much the whole game. There were not a lot of assignments on block outs and our guys really crashed the boards hard. There were a lot of rebounds to be had with both teams shooting in the 34-percent range. That's going to create a lot of rebounds.

Q: On if Gomes is well suited for the small forward spot:
A: It's something I want him to get comfortable with. I think he can be effective at both spots and knowing that he didn't get a lot of opportunities to play there in Boston, I wanted him to kind of learn that and get him some minutes there early. He played both spots during the game in Turkey. I want him to get more comfortable and know what the differences between the two are.

Q: On the point guard play thus far:
A: I thought Randy Foye struggled a little bit and he is having a little tendinitis in his knee. But he needs to be more assertive from a leadership standpoint in organizing us both offensively and defensively, which we've talked about now. I thought Sebastian Telfair gave us a huge lift. He came in and really played well. Changed the tempo of the game for us. I thought it was a very solid game for him. I think Randy had his best practice today since the first couple of days of camp. It's different for every player, you get what I call camp legs and I think Randy had a little bit of that on Saturday night. His legs were dead and he didn't have a lot of bounce to his legs. I told him that there's going to be days, whether you're sick and not feeling well or you don't have any legs during the course of the year, but you can't then shut down your mouth and your ability to organize and get guys to spots and tell them what we're doing. I think he did that a little in that game.
