Quick Hits | Sacramento at Minnesota Reaction

After last night’s 111-108 loss to the Sacramento Kings at the Target Center, our Kyle Ratke made a few observations that he didn’t have time to tweet out or put in last night’s recap. Here are a few quick hits.

1.) Rubio’s Turnovers = Bad News

Point guard Ricky Rubio had five turnovers last night. After the game Rubio made it clear that he needs to do a better job of finding his teammates and not forcing plays. For what it’s worth, Isaiah Thomas had seven turnovers… But Thomas also scored 26 points. Rubio scored five.

Rubio has had five or more turnovers in six games this season. The Wolves are 1-5 in those games.

2.) Stopping Rudy Gay

That’s something the Wolves weren’t able to do last night. Gay scored a season-high 33 points, going 12-of-19 from the field to go with six assists and five steals. It marked his first 30+ point, 5+ rebounds and 5+ assist game of the season and third of his career.

After the game, Rick Adelman noted that he thought about putting former King Luc Mbah a Moute on Gay, but noted that his team also needed an offensive boost, so he stuck with the rotation guys.

Mbah a Moute is probably the team’s best perimeter defender. The way Gay was shooting, I’m not sure if anyone could have stopped him, but the way he sounded last night, Adelman would have subbed Mbah a Moute in if he had a second chance.

3.) The Key Matchup?

Going into the night, we thought the big matchup would be between DeMarcus Cousins and Nikola Pekovic. That wasn’t exactly the case. Cousins scored 20 points and hauled in 11 rebounds, while Pekovic scored 14 and grabbed eight rebounds. But by watching the game, the two going up against each other wasn’t a focal part of either team’s plan. Or it didn’t play out that way. What really got to the Wolves was Thomas and Gay hitting tough shot after tough shot… and sometimes open shots.

After the game Cousins said the matchup with Pekovic was pretty even.

“Pek played a good game, he made some big shots got some big boards. He made some big shots towards the end but I wouldn’t necessarily say I outplayed him. Pek played a great game tonight”
