Petersen, Smith to Team Up in Golf Tourney

The Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater at Reynolds Plantation – the nation’s premier head coach and celebrity golf event – today announced the completion of its 14-team field of competitors for the April 29 event. Coach and celebrity team members are now headed to beautiful Reynolds Plantation to prepare for the tournament round and their shot at the $100,000 first-place scholarship check.

The final two teams to be added to the 2008 field are the University of Michigan and the University of Minnesota.

Minnesota head basketball coach Tubby Smith will team up with former Golden Gophers’ basketball great and current television analyst for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jim Petersen.

Over his 17 seasons as a head coach, Tubby Smith has had 15 20-win seasons – reaching the NCAA Tournament each of those years – and has amassed a record of 407-159. Smith’s coaching has had an immediate impact after just one season with the Gophers. The team went from 8-22 in 2007 to 20-13 in 2008, reaching the Big Ten Tournament semi-finals.

Jim Petersen played eight seasons in the NBA for the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors. With the Rockets, Petersen shared the frontcourt with All-stars Akeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. Before the NBA, Petersen played four seasons for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and was a member of the team that won the Big 10 championship in 1982.

The Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater at Reynolds Plantation will be played April 29 and features pairings that include a university head coach and a celebrity alumnus from the same school competing in a scramble format against other university teams from around the country for their share of the $350,000 scholarship purse.
