By The Numbers: Wolves At The NBA Draft Lottery

The 2013 NBA Draft Lottery will take place Tuesday, May 21 starting at 7:00 p.m. CT (ESPN) with the order of selections unveiled between 7:25 and 7:59 p.m. CT.

Currently slotted to select ninth overall, the Wolves enter the lottery with a 6.11% chance of landing a top-three pick. Here's a look at Minnesota's odds of landing each of the top three picks:

No. 1 Pick: 1.7%

No. 2 Pick: 2.0%

No. 3 Pick: 2.41%

Statistically, the most likely result tomorrow night is that the Wolves remain at No. 9 (81.31% chance). Here are a few notes on the 2013 Lottery and the Wolves’ franchise Lottery history.

  • The Wolves will either select 12th, 11th, 10th, 9th, 3rd, 2nd or 1st based on the results of tomorrow night’s Draft Lottery.

  • This year marks the Timberwolves' 15th appearance in the Draft Lottery. This does not include 1989, when the Wolves were an expansion franchise and were awarded the 10th overall pick in the draft. It also does not include 1999, when the Wolves had New Jersey's lottery pick as part of the Stephon Marbury/Terrell Brandon deal, nor 2009, then the Wolves acquired the No. 5 overall selection from the Washington Wizards in the Mike Miller/Randy Foye trade.

  • The highest the Wolves have ever selected in the draft is second (Derrick Williams in 2011).

  • In their 14 previous lottery appearances, the Wolves have remained in the same draft position six times and fallen eight times. Minnesota has never moved up in the draft through the lottery.

  • The Wolves have never drafted ninth overall.

  • Notable No. 9 overall picks include NBA All-Stars Joakim Noah (2007), Andre Iguodala (2004), Amare Stoudemire (2002), Shawn Marion (1999), Dirk Nowitzki (1998) and Tracy McGrady (1997).

  • In 2008, the Chicago Bulls were slotted to select ninth overall before winning the Draft Lottery and eventually drafting Derrick Rose.

  • In the 19 years of the current Draft Lottery system, the team with the best odds has won the top overall pick just twice (Cleveland in 2003; Orlando in 2004).
