NBA Draft 10 Days Away

Mike Trudell
Wolves Reporter

All of a sudden, just 10 days separate Minnesota from its next crop of rookies.

So who's it gonna be?

We'll see who accepts the Wolves' newly designed jersey from NBA Commissioner David Stern on June 26, when the Wolves will pick third, 31st and 34th ... Unless, of course, Minnesota makes a trade or two.

There are several options that the Wolves' basketball operations department might consider heading into the big day. Among them:

A) Stay put: Select the best player/best fit for the squad at No. 3, and use the first (31 overall) and fourth (34) picks of the second round on a guy Minnesota loves that slipped, a prospect with nice upside or a foreign player.
B) Trade Up: Keep the No. 3 pick, and package 31 and 34 to swap picks with a team in the high teens or low 20s.
C) Trade Down: Move down in the lottery by offering the third pick if a team desperate enough for a particular player is offering something Minnesota loves (for example, a pick a few spots lower plus a first-round pick in 2009), and either keep or package its second-round picks.

Some of those topics were opined upon by Wolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale after Minnesota worked out Chris Douglas-Roberts, Nicolas Batum, Bryce Taylor and Deron Washington on Monday at Target Center.

"There will be a few teams behind us that will say, 'We've absolutely fallen in love with player A, we have to have him,'" said McHale. "We have options right now of moving around ... I still like our position of being able to pick the guy that we like (at No. 3), but we'll see."

And the second-round picks?

"We can move into the first round if we want to, but it has to be a guy that is worthwhile," said McHale. "At a certain point, if we get to 15 and there are still 20 guys we really like, then you're saying, 'We're going to get two of those guys.' So it wouldn't really make sense (to trade up)."

Basically, the Wolves very well may have the option of moving their two second-round picks to get into the first round, but see no reason to do it on draft night if one of the players the covet isn't there.

"We have six or seven guys that we like a lot, and we're (figuring out) what level are we willing to package 31 and 34 to go get these guys," explained McHale.

Some of those quotes came from questions asked by KFAN's Henry Lake, so we pulled up a chair alongside the co-host of "Sludge and Lake" to discuss.
