Mike Miller Press Conference

Former Sixth Man and Rookie of the Year Mike Miller, the player last week's eight-player blockbuster trade wouldn't have been completed without, met with the media Tuesday afternoon at Target Center. Wolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale took questions alongside the 28-year-old forward.

You can either listen to the complete press conference by clicking on the audio link, or read the full transcript below. We're fine either way.

Kevin McHale's Opening Statement:
We're excited to have Mike. He was a huge, huge part of that deal on draft night. A matter of fact, if Mike hadn't been involved, the deal wouldn't have gone through. We're really excited to have him and I've already talked about the deal and a lot of stuff. I can't really add anymore except for the fact that Mike's a proven three-point shooter, (has) the ability to spread the floor, (is a) very very good rebounder (and) playmaker at his size. I just couldn't be more excited to bring him onboard. He's only 28 and in the prime of his career.(I'm) looking forward to all the help he is going to bring us.

Wolves Forward Mike Miller's opening statement:
I first of all want to say thanks to the organization for giving me the opportunity to come back home. It's going to be a great challenge and an opportunity I've looked forward to for awhile. Growing up, I always watched (the) Minnesota Timberwolves and now to be a part of it is going to be fun. I'm excited to be a part of a young nucleus that I think has a chance to be special in the future. I think if we can continue to keep this nucleus around and commit to it, I think it has a chance to be special and a playoff contender. Not tomorrow, or this year, (but) in a few years it should be fun to be a part of. I just want to say thanks to the Timberwolves organization for giving me that opportunity and I'm looking forward to it.

Q: On if he always envisioned being a member of the Wolves:
Miller: Well you envision it, but everyone knows in this league it's a big business. You never know (if) you'll have the opportunity to do that. When I woke up to that phone call on that night, I was excited. It just gives me an opportunity to come back home (and play) in front of friends and family and a lot of great fans.

Q: On what it is like to hear that the Wolves draft day trade wouldn't have happened without him being a part of it:
Miller: About as big of a compliment as you can get. Really it's something that will be a good challenge for me ... I've been in the league now, going into next year, nine years. I've been through winning seasons, I've been through losing seasons - I think that's something I can bring to this (team), I think you learn from both of them. The last two years have taken a toll on me; so winning is going to be something that is very important for me. Hopefully I can bring some good three-point shooting. I can't guarantee I'm going to make everything - I wish it was that easy - but I can guarantee that I'm going to work hard and be as good of a leader as possible. That's really about it.

Q: On where he was when the trade happened and how he found out:
Miller: I was actually in Cancun, Mexico for my brother's wedding. I found out at about 12 o'clock that night.

Q: On the reaction from the wedding party when he told them about the trade:
Miller: They were excited, because most of the people were from South Dakota. It makes it a lot easier for them to come see me.

Q: On how important it is for a three-point shooter such as himself to have a guy like Al Jefferson that's going to demand double teams:
Miller: It's a dream. It's a dream. Anyone that demands a double team is a shooters dream. I always want to keep him healthy and keep feeding him the ball. He makes my job a lot easier.

Q: On how Miller will help Jefferson next year:
McHale: It helps everybody. He's a great court-spreader, a proven NBA three-point shooter, but also he can make plays. He's certainly not a specialist; he can do a lot of things. He rebounds very well, makes plays, takes care of the ball, doesn't have a lot of turnovers and shoots a real high percentage. You add that, it's going to give Randy Foye more room, it's going to give Al more room, it's going to give everybody we have on the floor more room. You have to account for Mike at all times, and that's a big thing. You just can't run around willy-nilly and leaving guys open, he'll make you pay. It's going to help Al a great deal, but it helps everybody.

In turn when a team really functions well and plays well, as it helps Mike, Mike helps them. It's hand-in-hand. I think that's what you're looking at. Al's going to make Mike's life easier and Mike's going to make Al's life easier. Randy's going to make Mike's life easier and Mike's going to make Randy's life easier ... That's how you become a good team. It's never really the one guy; it's a collection of the guys that you have. They are all going to compliment each other and I really am excited to see this group out there and get after it.

Q: On if improving the three-point shooting was something the Wolves aimed to do this offseason:
McHale: Yeah, I wanted to improve our ability to spread the court. I think everybody who watched our team play last year noticed when Foye came back - especially when he got his legs back underneath him - I think it changed a great deal, just having another court-spreader out there. Adding a few more and getting a healthy Randy from the start of the year, it could be good. Al just demands a lot of attention, so its very hard for teams now to say, 'OK where are we coming from.' Last year we had lineups sometimes where two or three guys were roaming and it got kind of jammed up in there. I think those roaming days are over ... It's going to be a little easier for everybody. Adding that three-point shooting was big, but I thought adding basketball players - again, Kevin Love's a basketball player, Mike Miller's a basketball player - I'm excited to have those guys a part of our team. I'm really excited for (Brian) Cardinal and (Jason) Collins and what they can bring to the locker room and on the floor. I just think our team took a huge step up in a lot of areas the night that that trade was done.

Q: On what else about the Wolves besides coming home made joining the team attractive:
Miller: I think we can make a push (towards the playoffs). As tough as the West is, I think we are capable of doing that. What I think we need to do is just focus in on what we have here and get better with it. The stuff we have here is going to be really special in the future. You look at Randy Foye, a guy that has been injured but is really talented and young. Then you've got Al Jefferson, who's only really played two years - last year the first year really being the man - so he's young. And you look at Kevin Love just coming in now and Corey Brewer, we're just a young team, but we're talented. Like (McHale) said, we know how to play basketball, which is very key and will help down the stretch and win games. I think we've got a chance. But coming to a team like this and seeing the excitement and the commitment to winning is what excites me a lot.

Q: On how it feels to be the veteran at 28-years-old
Miller: Different. At 28 to be the veteran is different, but it's another challenge and it's going to be a fun challenge. I look at these kind of challenges as exciting, so it will be something that I look forward to doing.

Q: On why he thinks he was such a popular player in Memphis:
Miller: I don't know really, to be honest with you. I try to have repore with everybody where I'm playing. I try to get in the community a lot and I'll try to do the same here. I think that's a big part of what we do. I think being in the community is huge. We know exactly what helps us become successful is the fans. We only have a short term to give back, so I'll be in the community just as much here as I was in Memphis.

Q: On how many times he made it to the Twin Cities growing up:
Miller: Quite a bit. I used to come here quite a bit and watch games. I was a big Vikings fan, Twins fan, Timberwolves fan, so this is pretty much home for me as far as professional athletics go. I'm just excited to be here.

Q: On if being named an Olympic alternate was a good confidence boost:
Miller: Absolutely. I think the one thing it helped most is that you get around the best players in the world. You see how they prepare for games, you see how they lead their teams, you see the stuff that they do that gets them in positions to win games. Anytime you can get around those guys and you can soak that stuff in, I think it was one thing that really helped me. It helped me learn how to prepare, learn how to adjust to things, learn how to play off people. It was a situation where you couldn't help but get better as a player physically and mentally.

Q: On if he thinks Brian Cardinal can contribute to the Wolves:
Miller: Absolutely. I think Brian brings a couple different intangibles - a great locker room guy a guy that's been around the game awhile, knows how to play, and you put him situations where he can shoot and he can help us in that area.

Q: On if he is going to give the Wolves 37 points a night, the amount he scored on them the last time the teams' played in 2007-08:
Miller: If I could do that, I'd been here a long time ago.

Q: On if he knows the Wolves' other two Florida players well:
Miller: Oh yeah. It's going to be fun (being) reunited. If we keep getting Gators here, we'll win for sure.
