Jan. 30, 2004 — Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Kevin McHale today announced the team has signed free agent guard Darrick Martin to a 10-day contract. Martin comes to Minnesota from the CBA's Sioux Falls Sky Force. The Wolves' active roster stands at 12 players in advance of the team's game at the Los Angeles Lakers tonight (9:30 CST).
Martin, a 5-11, 170-pound guard from UCLA, averaged 18.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 1.70 steals per game in 20 contests split between the Yakima Sun Kings and Sioux Falls this season. In 2002-03 he averaged 18.3 points, 6.9 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 31.8 minutes per game in 20 contests with Yakima. He was named CBA Playoff MVP after leading the Sun Kings to a league championship last season.
In 399 NBA games over eight seasons with the Wolves, Vancouver Grizzlies, Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks, Martin has averaged 8.0 points, 1.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 20.3 minutes per game. The Long Beach, Calif., native went undrafted in the 1994 NBA Draft. In his best professional season (1996-97), Martin averaged 10.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 0.7 steals and 22.2 minutes per game while playing in all 82 contests for the Clippers.
Martin is in his third stint with Minnesota, having originally signed to the first of two consecutive 10-day contracts on Feb. 13, 1995. He was signed for the remainder of the season on March 7, 1995. Martin was later traded by the Grizzlies to Minnesota for a 1996 second-round draft pick on Jan. 12, 1996.
