Minnesota Timberwolves President Chris Wright's family pet may be a watchdog, but she's a far cry from Crunch.

Kacy, a Shih Tzu, has been with the Wrights for 13 years. And there’s no question Kacy has become a big part of the Wright family.

"The old, well-warn cliché is that it’s man’s best friend, and it’s absolutely true,” Wright said. “She is a wonderful, loving dog. When you walk into the house after a long, hard day, you know Kacy will be there and she’s all over you for the first 10 minutes you’re in the house. It’s a great feeling."

Wright said when his daughter, Christy, was 7 years old, she began asking for a pet. Though her two older brothers had other animals growing up, Christy quickly showed interest in getting a dog.

"We went the goldfish route, we went the hamster route, we actually had a duck that lived in the yard that she called shadow,” Wright said. “It just didn’t work out."

After his family "ganged up" on him about getting a dog, the Wrights found themselves the owners of the lively Shih Tzu puppy.

"They’re guard dogs. Small and beautiful, but they’re yappers, they’re barkers," said Wright of Shih Tzus. Kacy is known to alert the whole house at any movement, inside the house or out. "The dog can go berserk," said Wright.

It took him a little while to warm up to the idea of being a Shih Tzu owner. When Wright would take Kacy for walks in his neighborhood, people took notice.

"Since the dog was so cute as a pup, everybody would come up and ask what it was, and I’d have to say Shih Tzu,” he said. “I didn’t want to have to be walking around, the president of the Minnesota Timberwolves, telling people I have a Shih Tzu as a dog."

But through the years, Wright admitted he definitely has a soft spot for the family pet.

Wright said the memories his family has with Kacy are invaluable—from their holidays together to their moments together around the house.

"It just becomes such an integral part of your family and means so much to all your family members," Wright said of his family's time with Kacy. "It’s part of your home, part of your life, and it’s just an incredible experience."
