Bill Bellamy Rolls Through

Mike Trudell
Wolves Reporter

Stand-up comedian and actor Bill Bellamy was in Minneapolis shooting a bit for the fifth season of "Last Comic Standing" on NBC, and he stopped by Target Center to talk to chat with some Wolves.

Here's what the former MTV VJ, star of Def Comedy Jam, actor in "Any Given Sunday" and "How to be a Player" Bellamy had to say:

MT: How has your career been going?
Bill Bellamy: My career has been really, really good. I've been very blessed to have a lot of fun with my career. From people who got wind of me from my MTV days, doing movies or sitcoms ... I just did a drama called "Fastlane," which by the way, the DVD is coming out this summer. It's just fun.

MT: What can you tell us about your current project, NBC's "Last Comic Standing?"
Bellamy: This new job kind of reminds me of when I was a VJ on MTV because I'm doing a lot of hosting and I'm going to a lot of different cities. What makes this different is the comedy, and we are giving young cats the opportunity to get some exposure, which is needed in this line of work. People need to see you. I'm flying from city to city auditioning cats, giving them tips on how to do it and what they need to do. I have a lot of respect among my peers, which is really nice.

MT: Everybody's answering your phone calls now...
Bellamy: Right, right, and it's kinda hot. I love it.

MT: You grinded it out to get where you are today, working constantly. Do you enjoy getting to be in a position where you can help some younger people down that path?
Bellamy: Yeah I really do. I think it's a great thing. I wish I had an opportunity with a show so big when I was coming up. I mean, this show is a really huge show. It will definitely change your life. You doing a great set on ”Last Comic Standing" is incredible. It's got millions of viewers.

MT: What time does it come on so we can check it out?
Bellamy: It comes on at 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays. We're part of "Must See TV." So all summer long you'll be able to watch the show and see who's going to beat everybody out. Also, I'm still learning, but I still like to give advice to some of the cats who look up to me and sort of say, "Bill, how are you able to still be in the game and still seem like you're having fun?" It's because I love what I'm doing. Seriously, I just love having fun and kicking it with cats who are real people and traveling and meeting people from small towns, middle towns, huge cities. Everybody is real people man, and I think real recognize real. That's why I think I've been so lucky.

MT: I know you love basketball. How has today been working out with Randy Foye, Ryan Gomes and Ed Pinckney?
Bellamy: Great. You know, that is a dream that I've always had in the back of my mind. I've always loved basketball and I play as much as I can. I just admire these guys for being able to make it into the league and overcome whatever obstacles they did to make it. It's inspiring, and I hope that I inspire comedians in the same way and they look at me and say, "Bill made it to the big leagues, he's really in there and I want to get to that level." I hope that I can do that.

MT: And Foye's a Jersey boy...
Bellamy: Yeah for sure! He's a Jersey boy, we're both from the same town. That's kind of hot.

MT: Now, you struggled with your shot a little bit early on before getting it going. But you've been doing comedy, not shooting hoops, so we'll give you a pass.
Bellamy: Yeah, you know, I've got to stay in my lane. But I've got to get warm. See that's my thing. I've been doing a lot of comedy. Once I get warm, it's lights out. It's lights out! It's over, player!
