2013 EuroBasket Roundup | Sept. 13, 2013

Spain dropped its second game of the 2013 EuroBasket tournament on Thursday, falling to Greece 79-75 in its first game of Group F, second-round play. The loss puts Spain at 4-2 for the tournament with two games remaining in Group F.

Spain takes on Finland on Saturday at 10:45 p.m. CT. Its final game of Group F play will take place against Italy on Sept. 16 at 10:45 a.m. CT.

Greece stunned Spain thanks to a pair of comeback attempts, once in the second quarter and again in the fourth when they overcame and eight-point deficit. Spain opened up the quarter up 60-52, but Spain went on a 10-1 run to start the fourth and re-took the lead. After both teams went back and forth for the ensuring two minutes, Greece pulled away with three minutes to play thanks to strong play from Yannis Bourousis down the stretch. He hit a pair of jumpers and two free throws in a two-minute span that led to a four-point Greece lead with 1:56 to play.

Spain led all most statistical categories, but the biggest difference in the ballgame was taking care of the ball. Spain had 17 turnovers, and Greece had nine steals in the ball game.

Ricky Rubio finished the game with six points, three assists, one steal and three turnovers. Marc Gasol and Rudy Fernandez each had 20 points to lead Spain, while Vassilis Spanoulis had 20 points to pace Greece. Greece had four players in double figures.

Groups E and F each have six teams competing in this second round of play, and the top four teams will advance to the quarterfinals and will play interchanged matchups (E1 vs. F4, F1 vs. E4, etc.).
