A Season For The Ages

In the 2002-03 regular season, Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett:

  • Led the Wolves to a franchise-record 51 wins; the team also set a franchise record with 33 home wins, second-best in the NBA
  • Guaranteed his fourth straight 20/10/5 season after just 71 games; he is second only to Larry Bird (five consecutive) in league history in that category, and tied with Wilt Chamberlain in total 20/10/5 seasons
  • Set career highs in all three categories — 23.0 ppg, 13.4 rpg, 6.0 apg; only Wilt Chamberlain (in MVP seasons of 1966-67 and 1967-68) exceeded those averages in one season
  • Ranked among the NBA's top 15 in scoring, rebounds and assists — the first player to do so since Larry Bird (24.3 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 7.5 apg) in 1989-90
  • Led the league with 68 double-doubles, the most in the NBA in 10 years — since Hakeem Olajuwon (72) and Shaquille O'Neal (68) in 1992-93
  • Finished the season leading Minnesota in all five major "counting" categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. He became the third player in NBA history to accomplish that feat, joining Dave Cowens (1977-78) and Scottie Pippen (1994-95)
  • Led the NBA with six triple-doubles
  • Missed a triple-double by one assist in six other games, and finished either two or three assists shy in 16 other games
  • Set a Timberwolves record with 19 consecutive double-doubles
  • Ranked first in the NBA in efficiency ranking; he was the only player above 30.00 points on that list
  • Ranked second in the league in rebounding average; he set franchise records for total rebounds and defensive rebounds
  • Tied his career high with 24 rebounds March 5 at Sacramento; set a franchise record with 20 defensive rebounds in that game
  • Ranked ninth in scoring average; he scored in double figures all 82 games, and 30+ points 10 times
  • Had five games of 20+ points and 20+ rebounds
  • Scored his 10,000th career point on Opening Night and his 11,000th on Jan. 30 at Dallas
  • Ranked first among forwards (and 13th overall) in assists
  • Led the Wolves in points, rebounds and assists 21 times
  • Recorded 301 "Nestle Crunch Time" points, tops in the league
  • Named Western Conference Player of the Month for April
  • Was named Western Conference Player of the Month for February as the Timberwolves set a team record for most wins in a month
  • Scored 27.7 ppg in February, the highest-scoring month of his eight-year career
  • Earned MVP honors in the 2003 NBA All-Star Game
  • Was named Western Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 25
