Houston, We (Might) Have A Problem

After advancing to the Western Conference Finals last season, the Houston Rockets are on the verge of missing the playoffs entirely.

Going into tonight’s game, the Rockets are 39-41, a game back from the 40-40 Utah Jazz for the eighth seed. The Rockets are also two games back from the Dallas Mavericks from the seventh seed.

Dallas plays Utah tonight, so that makes things interesting, while the Rockets have the Wolves.

If Dallas win, the Mavericks are in. If the Rockets lose, the Mavericks are also in.

If the Jazz win and the Rockets lose, Utah is in. That scenario would also eliminate the Rockets.

For Houston to make the playoffs, the Rockets need to beat the Wolves and Kings (Wednesday) and need Utah to lose once or Dallas to lose twice. Houston can also make it if it goes 1-1 and the Jazz fall to the Mavericks and the Lakers on Wednesday.

Things could be over tonight for the Rockets. Then again, with two wins and a Jazz loss, the Rockets could be in. The Rockets hold tie-breakers over both teams.

But with James Harden and Dwight Howard, they probably didn’t see this as a possibility going into the season.

The Wolves said they aren't worried about playing spoiler at this point in the season, but it is nice that one of the final two games of the season will impact the playoffs.
