Flashback Friday - 2012-13

This photo is from the 1995 NBA Draft in Toronto just after the Minnesota Timbewolves selected Kevin Garnett with the fifth overall pick. Garnett became the face of the franchise over the next decade, leading the Wolves to their lone eight playoff appearances.

As Flip Saunders returns as President of Basketball Operations and the 2013 Draft Combine is set to take place next week in Chicago, take a look at this shot of Flip with Kevin Garnett from 1996, just a year removed from being selected fifth overall by the Wolves out of high school.

This week's photo focuses on a young Pooh Richardson guarding Byron Scott during a 1990 road trip to the Great Western Forum to face the Los Angeles Lakers. Richardson was the Wolves' first ever draft pick (10th overall in 1989) and played his first three years in Minnesota. He averaged 17.1 points and 9.0 assists per game in 1991.

As we wrap up a season in which Wolves coach Rick Adelman earned his 1,000th win, let's go back to 1989 and the inaugural Wolves season with Minnesota's first coach, Bill Musselman. This photo was taken at Madison Square Garden during the season in which Adelman, then with Portland, made his first trip to the NBA Finals. Musselman coached the Wolves for their first two seasons.

We're getting set for tonight's Wolves vs. Jazz game in Utah, so why not take a trip back to Andrei Kirilenko's roots here in the NBA? In this photo, AK (back row, center) poses with Tyson Chandler to his left, Richard Jefferson to his right, and Pau Gasol (front, left) and Jamaal Tinsley (front, right) pose as part of the 2003 NBA All-Star Sophomore team. Coincidentally, Gasol's Lakers' playoff hopes will in part be decided by how the Wolves do against the Jazz tonight and on Monday.

As we get set for tonight's game with the Raptors, which could be Rick Adelman's 1,000th career victory, let's flash back to Dec. 11, 2001 when Adelman's Kings beat the Orlando Magic 112-110 for his 500th win. This picture shows some of the staples of those Kings clubs, including Vlade Divac (far left) and Chris Webber (third from right) celebrating with Adelman after reaching the milestone.

With the Wolves hosting Oklahoma City tonight, let's pay tribute to the leading rebounder in Thunder/Supersonics' franchise history. Current Wolves assistant coach Jack Sikma collected 7,729 boards during his time with the Sonics from 1978-86. The closest active player on the list is Nick Collison, who is sixth with 3,896 rebounds in his Sonics/Thunder career.

In advance of tonight's Wolves vs. Suns game, let's go back and take a look at Phoenix's 1993 Western Conference title season and league MVP Charles Barkley, who in this photo is taking on Wolves center Felton Spencer and guard Doug West as forward Christian Laettner looks on.

As we get set for the Nuggets and Timberwolves on Saturday, take a look back at this Randy Breuer hook shot during one of the two teams' meetings at McNichols Arena in Denver during the Wolves' inaugural season. It reminds us how far the Nuggets have come in their team color scheme and how short shorts were in the 1980s.
