Reading Time-Out with Gomes and Collins

As part of the Minnesota Timberwolves Fastbreak Foundation's Operation Minnesota Heroes Month, presented by Popp.com, the Wolves held a Reading Timeout Tuesday at Jenny Lind Elementary School.

Joining Alan Horton, Crunch, Ryan Gomes and Jason Collins, were two returning Purple Heart recipients Chris Holbrook and Mark Seifert.

The group taught the value of teamwork and the importance of reading by sharing the story, "A Little Story About A Big Turnip," with a group of 1st and 2nd graders.

"These kids were great," said Sergeant Chris Holbrook, "It was really nice to be able to come out here and read for them and teach them a little about teamwork. Hopefully they learned a little about teamwork, like in the Army and the Military everybody works on a team, just like in basketball everyone works on a team."

Lance Corporal Mark Seifert said this event showed the kids a great example of how to live their lives.

"I think it shows that there aren't huge divides between people that are overseas doing great things for our country and the people that are here living their lives. I think it's a great example for the kids."

Being up on stage with two Purple Heart recipients was a humbling experience for Jason Collins, the Wolves 7-foot center.

"It's a lot of fun and it makes you appreciate (what you have), and I feel humbled talking to the soldiers and hearing their stories and their sacrifice. Its an experience not only for the kids but for us as well."

Collins went on to say he hopes the kids learn, not only about teamwork, but to appreciate reading as well.

"I just hope the kids have fun, and they understand the importance of reading, and everyone has a good time out here and really enjoys the experience."

After the reading timeout the kids, soldiers and players went back to their classrooms to make cards for soldiers who are still overseas.

"I'm incredibly honored," said Lance Corporal Seifert. "I'm thrilled that people still have the interest and active desire to honor veterans right now."

And Sergeant Holbrook said he was honored that the Timberwolves go out of their way to include soldiers in these types of events.

"Its nice to know that an organization like the Timberwolves recognizes soldiers and wants us to come out and be a part of events like this with little kids. It was definitely fun."

All month the Wolves will be honoring Military personnel at games and different events as part of their Operation MN Heroes month, presented by Popp.Com
