Reading and Learning Center Dedication

On Friday the Minnesota Timberwolves Fastbreak Foundation, players Corey Brewer and Craig Smith, along with Rebuilding Together dedicated and officially opened the newly renovated Reading and Learning Center at the City Inc. in Minneapolis.

This event began two weeks ago when the Timberwolves held an 'All-Staff Volunteer Day' at the City Inc. The Wolves staff worked alongside Rebuilding Together to repaint the gym, bathrooms and kitchens, as well as updating the indoor and outdoor basketball courts, cafeteria and the reading and learning room.

"They did fabulous," said Cindy Gates, COO of The City Inc. "They came in that morning with at least 35 volunteers, they had it all set up, everyone got to work. It was really a lot of fun to have them here."

The Wolves Staff spent the morning splashing blue and white paint on the walls and the afternoon group took care of the detailing, trying to make The City Inc. look like a smaller version of the Target Center.

"Looks just like the Target Center," said forward Corey Brewer with a smile, "Its really nice, looks like they did a really good job! The paint looks good, and the Timberwolves colors look great."

After the renovation was done, Cindy Gates said the kids were really impressed. "They were very excited. They were very surprised at all the painting that had been done, the bathrooms were all remodeled, so they went in there and they were just amazed at all that. They were just really excited."

Fred Easter, the President and CEO of City Inc. said it was humbling that the Timberwolves and Rebuilding America would take such an interest in their Reading and Learning Center.

"Its an extraordinary happening for us. We are a small, neighborhood, community operation. To have an NBA franchise involved with us instead of the multimillion dollar organizations you see on TV associated with the NBA...its humbling. I am just amazed, surprised and delighted that the Timberwolves would come to our little corner of the North Side and make as dramatic a change in our organization as they have. I could not be more thankful."

There were a number of kids in the audience for this dedication who got a chance to ask questions to Corey Brewer and Chris Richard, and Easter said he hopes the kids recognize the effort put in by the Wolves franchise and Rebuilding Together.

"That they are not alone, that they are not too small, too unimportant to be recognized by folks at this level. The ball players are almost the least of it. The Organization's involvement, and willingness to be involved for me, and I think for them, is a tremendous buildup."

The Timberwolves Fastbreak Foundation provides and supports hands-on programs that positively impact Minnesota youth.

Leading up to the home opener versus the Sacramento Kings, Wednesday at 7pm, the Timberwolves will continue to be out in the community at different events each day.
