It was smiles all around as actor/director/rapper Ice Cube joined Wolves players Troy Hudson and Eddie Griffin for a grand entrance to the kitchen of the Cookie Cart, a non-profit bakery dedicated to serving at-risk youth in north Minneapolis.
Ice Cube, in town to promote his upcoming family-friendly movie “Are we there yet,” took some time to drop by with the T-Wolves and work with the youth, who were very excited to see them. Cheers and delighted laughter greeted the three special workers as they donned hairnets and gloves before pounding out cookie dough in preparation for baking.
Cube, Hudson and Griffin, all in a playful mood, rotated around the room talking and joking with all of the workers and, of course, making cookies.
The Cookie Cart Learning Center is a fully-functional commercial bakery that provides paid employment to youth participants while engaging them in a variety of programs designed to teach them career skills, leadership and academic commitment.
Following work in the kitchen, the three posed for pictures and signed t-shirts before heading off to a private screening of the movie with a larger group of local youths at the Block E Crown theatre.
“This is the most fun I’ve had all day,” said Cube, before joking that he may be headed for a supervisor position with the bakery after establishing his cookie-making prowess. “This is what it’s all about,” he added, saying he very much enjoyed the opportunity to interact with kids he would never normally get to see.
All agreed that it was a great event. “I think a real connection was made tonight,” said Paul Seifert, Executive Director of Cookie Cart, adding that the spontaneity and good nature of the kids along with Cookie Cart’s terrific relationship with the T-Wolves made for a great experience for all.
