Kurt Thomas brings the Sonics a veteran presence on and off the court. Acquired in a July 2007 trade with the Phoenix Suns, Thomas is the most experienced player on the Sonics roster. A lottery pick in Miami, Thomas enjoyed his best years as the starting center for the New York Knicks before spending two years providing a defensive presence to the offensive-minded Suns. For Phoenix, Thomas famously battled two-time MVP Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs, and he has been celebrated for his ability to defend the post and rebound, as well as shoot from midrange. Thomas' experience also makes him a valuable mentor for the young Sonics big men.
