After playing sparingly in this first three seasons, Russell had a breakout 1996 playoffs, including the Western Conference Finals against the Sonics, averaging 9.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. That performance allowed Russell to claim a starting job as the Jazz advanced to the NBA Finals each of the next two seasons, where he defended Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan. Russell averaged a career-high 14.1 points in 1999-00. In the summer of 2002, Russell signed with the Washington Wizards.
