Oklahoma City, Sept. 28, 2010 -- The Oklahoma City Thunder has announced a unique fundraiser involving the team’s Tuesday, Oct. 12, preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies at Tulsa’s BOK Center. For every ticket sold, the Thunder will donate $1 to the Folds of Honor Foundation, a Tulsa-based organization dedicated to helping military families with educational support.
The Folds of Honor Foundation provides post-secondary educational scholarships to the spouses and children of service members disabled or killed as a result of their service to the nation.
Thunder Senior Vice President Brian Byrnes said the Thunder is pleased to partner with the nonprofit.
“This marks an opportunity for the Thunder to align with a Tulsa organization doing wonderful work for military families who have made tremendous sacrifices for our country,” Byrnes said.
“Like Folds of Honor, the Thunder holds deep respect for our armed forces and values inspiring children through the gift of education. We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the Folds of Honor Foundation, and we look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with this extraordinary organization.”
His sentiments were echoed by Folds of Honor Foundation Founder and C.O.O., Maj. Dan Rooney.
“We are proud of our local NBA team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and are thankful that they have stepped up to the plate in support of our nation’s service men and women,” he said.
“Through the charitable spirit of the NBA and with the help of NBA fans all over the greater Tulsa area, the Folds of Honor Foundation will be empowered to change dozens of lives for the families of our nation’s fallen. Great seats remain available for the Thunder’s third annual preseason visit to Tulsa. In addition to the Thunder, the Memphis team also features some prominent Oklahoma connections. The Grizzlies include former Oklahoma State University player Tony Allen as well as the No. 12 selection in this year’s NBA Draft, Xavier Henry. An Oklahoma City native, Henry led Putnam City High School to the 6A championship in 2009.
