Room for the Thunder in Heart and Home

Like any self-respecting Thunder fan, Scott Smith has chalked up his fair share of cherished Thunder memories. But among his favorite is a home game from March 2009, when the Thunder came back from a 17-point deficit to beat the San Antonio Spurs, 78-76.

“I have never heard the Ford Center -- or anywhere else, for that matter -- be so loud,” he said. “The arena literally shook. Once the clock expired, my buddy and I were swapping hugs and high-fives with people we didn't even know -- all because the Thunder won.”

A student at Oklahoma State University, Scott has long been an avowed Cowboys fan. But the Thunder’s arrival in Oklahoma City forced the 22-year-old to accommodate enough room in his heart for two sports loves.

He also had to make room in his apartment. Scott’s closet boasts a small display shelf, painted in Thunder colors, that features autographed memorabilia and various Thunder-related newspaper stories.

“Not a single day goes by where I am not representing the team by wearing some sort of apparel,” he said.

“I love the collegiate atmosphere of the whole thing. The Thunder unites all of the rowdy collegiate energy that has existed for so many years and puts it toward a unified body. Finally, OSU and OU fans have something to vent their passions at besides each other. The Ford Center absolutely rocks during home games.”
