Sweden Sweet on the Thunder


Sweden’s offerings to the world have ranged from Vikings to ABBA, so it’s only appropriate that this Scandinavian country has also found room for diehard Thunder fans.

Meet Dr. Lori Leidig, from the Swedish hamlet of Tågarp.

“I used to roll my eyes and go deaf when basketball came up,” said the 53-year-old retired psychiatrist. “Now, I actively participate in the conversation.”

Her love affair with the Thunder began back during springtime, when Lori was in Oklahoma City visiting her brother, a dye-in-the-wool Thunder fan.

“The three or four weeks at his house, he took me to all the home games,” she said. “It was awesome. Your players are very likable, and it shows that they really enjoy the game. It is not just a job or just a competition. They love what they are doing. That transfers to the crowd.”

She also heaped praise on the Thunder’s celebrated mascot, Rumble the Bison.

“I have been to numerous hockey, baseball, and U.S. rugby -- what you guys call football -- games spanning four decades,” she said, “and I have to tell you that your mascot is the best ever!”

Now a Thunder convert, Lori said she wears her Thunder T-shirt and ball cap almost everywhere she goes. It’s a wardrobe she’ll be sure to pack in a few years when her travels take her back to the United States.

“I will be booking my itinerary to follow where you are playing,” she said.
