Gus Williams
No. 1

From his point guard position, Gus Williams energized the Sonics 1978-79 World Championship team and provided excitement for fans with his dazzling fast-break moves.

Gus Williams averaged 28.6 points per game during the 1979 NBA Finals.
Known as "The Wizard", Williams had little opportunity to show his unique ability during two seasons with the Golden State Warriors, who picked him in the second round of the 1975 NBA Draft. Williams became a free agent and chose the Sonics because they were willing to give him a three-year guaranteed contract. It was one of the best decisions in Sonics history.

When Lenny Wilkens took over as Sonics Coach early in the 1977-78 season, he made Williams his point guard, and Williams would lead the Sonics to consecutive NBA Finals appearances. It was in the 1979 Finals, as the Sonics defeated the Washington Bullets four games to one, that Williams really shined, leading the team in scoring all five games and averaging 28.6 points per game.

Williams would go on to make two All-NBA teams in six years in Seattle before being traded to the Washington Bullets after the 1983-84 campaign. He remains one of just six players in Sonics history, and the only point guard, to average better than 20 points per game during his Seattle career. Williams also ranks fifth in Sonics history in points and fourth in both assists and steals.

Williams was one of three players in Sonics history to wear the number one. It was retired in his honor during a halftime ceremony which also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the championship team on Mar.26, 2004 as the Sonics took on the Denver Nuggets.
