Owens Becomes Second 66er to Receive NBA Call-Up

The longest tenured 66ers player on roster will be getting his first taste of the NBA.

The San Antonio Spurs announced that it has signed forward Larry Owens to a 10-day contract, making the Oral Roberts product the second 66er to be called up this season. Guard Zabian Dowdell signed with the Phoenix Suns last week.

Owens is the first call-up since last week’s NBA D-League Showcase, where the 6-7 forward helped Tulsa to a pair of wins. Owens was on the Spurs’ short list to fill its league-mandated 13th roster spot by Jan. 19.

Owens’ call-up is the result of a player who stuck with the 66ers’ player development program after spending several seasons overseas. Known as a good on-the-ball defender whose versatility allows him to guard multiple positions, Owens earned All D-League Third Team honors last season and was considered the heart and soul of the 66ers team that reached the D-League Finals.

Owens has averaged 12.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.1 steals and shot 46.2 percent from the field in 23 games this season. He started all 50 regular season games as well as eight playoff games for the 66ers. At 73 games, Owens has played the sixth-most games in franchise history.
