Mocking the Sonics Picks
Final Update: June 26, 2003

SUPERSONICS.COM has scoured the internet to find the latest mock drafts from various NBA experts. For the final update, just hours before the draft, we have this internet consenus to report: everyone thinks the Sonics will take a power forward with the 12th pick and a point guard with the 14th, assuming they stay in those picks. And who will those players be? That's tougher to decipher. Georgetown's Mike Sweetney is no longer considered a lock, with a 6-3 split between him and Kansas' Nick Collison. Three players get consideration at the point, with four mocks tabbing late riser Marcus Banks of UNLV, three Oregon's Luke Ridnour and a pair Brazilian Leandrinho Barbosa.

Sweetney.
Dan Wetzel, CBSSportsline.com (6/18)
12. Mike Sweetney, PF, Georgetown
14. Leandrinho Barbosa, PG, Brazil

comment: “He isn't going to be a dominating center like fellow Hoyas Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo and Alonzo Mourning, but he is an effective low-post scorer, rebounder and banger. A real space-eater who may get the nod over Kansas' Nick Collison, another likely choice. All of this could change if Ridnour is still available though -- Brent Barry is a stopgap solution at the point. . . . If the Sonics don't take a point at 12, they will at 14. Scouts call Barbosa fast, strong and in possession of long arms that can lock guys up defensively.”

Mike Kahn, CBSSportsline.com (6/25)
12. Mike Sweetney, PF, Georgetown
14. Luke Ridnour, PG, Oregon

comment: “The Sonics will hold their breath for Sweetney, a slightly undersized but tenacious interior player that they have sorely needed for years. . . . The Sonics need a point guard to develop and this native of the Pacific Northwest perfectly fits their needs -- but he might already be gone..”

Barbosa.
John Hollinger, CNNSI.com (6/23)
12. Mike Sweetney, PF, Georgetown
14. Leandrinho Barbosa, PG, Brazil

comment: “The Sonics' best post player last year was Jerome James. Yikes. . . . Some teams are worried about drafting a point guard who doesn't speak much English, but John Stockton went 20 years without talking in any language and it didn't hold him back.”

Ridnour.
Chad Ford, ESPN.com (6/22)
12. Nick Collison, PF, Kansas
14. Luke Ridnour, PG, Oregon

comment: “Sonics take a polished big man and future leader. . . . Sonics will nab a PG here -- if they still own the pick.”

Frank Burlison, FoxSports.com (6/25)
12. Mike Sweetney, PF, Georgetown
14. Luke Ridnour, PG, Oregon

comment: “Does Maciej Lampe go here instead? Or Brian Cook? I sort of wish I knew. Nick Collison could, too, if he is still looking antsy in the Green Room. . . . One of the two picks for the Sonics is going to be a guard. If Gaines is gone, the choice becomes rather obvious -- unless Seattle is sold on Marcus Banks.”

Banks.
Hoopsworld.com (6/25)
12. Mike Sweetney, PF, Georgetown
14. Marcus Banks, PG, UNLV

comment: “With Collison and Lampe gone, this should be a pretty easy choice for the Sonics (assuming of course they stay where they are). If either of those two is left as well, it becomes considerably harder. . . . Tough to say which of Banks, Ridnour, or Gaines the Sonics would take here if things played out as I have them going. My money’s on Banks, as the Sonics could use his defensive presence at the point.”

Collison.
HoopsHype.com (6/25)
12. Nick Collison, PF, Kansas
14. Marcus Banks, PG, UNLV

comment: “Very consistent. Has good vision of the court, great attitude, and is extremely skilled in the low post. . . . Excellent defender on the ball with some scoring punch. Would fit in well in Seattle.”

12. Nick Collison, PF, Kansas
14. Marcus Banks, PG, UNLV

Sean Deveney, SportingNews.com (6/25)
12. Mike Sweetney, PF, Georgetown
14. Marcus Banks, PG, UNLV

comment: "The Sonics got younger by trading for Ray Allen last season, and now they need to get bigger by adding post men. Sweetney is a fierce rebounder who may be short, but he projects as a thicker version of Elton Brand. He's not an offensive force now, but the Sonics don't need one. . . . Banks is super-quick and pesky defensively, and if he still is around, he could wind up in Seattle. The Sonics won't necessarily look for a point guard, but they like Banks, Barbosa and Gaines. They're working on a deal, though, so they may not be the ones who do the picking at Nos. 12 and 14."
