Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals was all San Antonio Spurs. After racing to a 13-point lead after one quarter and a 27-point lead at the half, the Spurs cruised to a 22-point victory despite a second half that Spurs Coach (and noted perfectionist) Gregg Popovich called "lousy". Worse for the Sonics were second-quarter sprained ankles suffered by both Ray Allen and Vladimir Radmanovic. Radmanovic's series is over after he suffered a severe sprain, while Allen is a game-time decision tonight. Allen did not participate in today's shootaround, instead getting treatment on the sidelines. But he and Sonics Coach Nate McMillan played coy after shootaround, insisting they won't know Allen's status until he tests the ankle this evening.

With or without Allen, the Sonics will need to make some adjustments for Game 2. That starts at the defensive end of the floor, where the Spurs shot 50.7% and got to the free-throw line 35 times. Tony Parker keyed San Antonio's attack, scoring 29 points on 11-for-18 shooting. Sonics big men need to be more aggressive and decisive in defending the pick-and-roll run by Parker and keeping the speedy Frenchman out of the lane. When Parker does get into the lane, the Sonics big man who doesn't step up and give help must rotate to the open San Antonio post player more quickly than in Game 1. For Popovich, turnovers were probably a large source of concern after San Antonio had 18 in Game 1, including 10 by reserves.

When the Sonics have the ball, better ball movement will be a key after the Sonics had only 10 assists in Game 1. Losing Radmanovic and Allen in the second quarter hurt the Sonics perimeter attack, as Seattle made only one 3-pointer in nine attempts on their own side of the court. (Rookie Nick Collison added a 3 from San Antonio's end to beat the third-quarter buzzer.) With or without Allen, it will be important for Rashard Lewis to establish himself early in the game as a go-to option on offense.

Parker is always quick, but he seemed to find another gear on Sunday night and was moving at a different speed than everyone else on the court. Parker shot only 27.6% from 3-point range this season, so the Sonics would like to force him to beat them from the perimeter. However, that plan is difficult to put into place because of Parker's speed and the way the Spurs use him. Luke Ridnour had eight points and four assists for the Sonics, but didn't have much room to operate off of the pick-and-roll against the Spurs tough defense.
Allen seemed to be getting into something of a groove before he was injured, scoring eight points on 4-for-7 shooting in the first quarter. He told reporters yesterday that he once scored a career high when bothered by tendinitis, but if he is able to play Allen may be limited to being a jump-shooter. If Allen can't go, Ronald "Flip" Murray - who has scored 20+ points 15 times in the 29 games Allen has missed over the last two seasons. The Sonics are 10-5 in those games. Brent Barry had 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting Sunday, including a key momentum 3 early in the fourth period.

Controversy will continue to follow Spurs forward Bruce Bowen after Allen sprained his ankle with Bowen defending him during Game 1. Bowen switched onto Lewis after the injury and kept Lewis quiet in January when Allen missed a game against the Spurs with a viral infection. Lewis had a slow first three quarters, but started to get going with eight points in the fourth period. Bowen shot just 1-for-5 from the field, though he contributed with five rebounds.
Another night, another 22 points and nine rebounds for Tim Duncan. Duncan seemed to throttle down a bit after the Spurs raced out to a big lead and had a quiet second half. What was really impressive about his performance was that Duncan, often a liability at the free-throw line, shot 10-for-11 on freebies. Duncan will be spending plenty of time at the line in this series as the Sonics throw several defenders at him, so they're hoping he cools off a bit in the future. Reggie Evans did a good job on the glass for the Sonics with seven rebounds in 18 minutes.

Jerome James could not duplicate his performance against the Sacramento Kings in the First Round during Game 1, posting only four points and two rebounds. James shot 2-for-8 from the field, but the Sonics and James are much more concerned with his being more of a defensive presence in the paint. James did not block a shot in 19 minutes of action. San Antonio's Nazr Mohammed wasn't a major factor, scoring thee points on 1-for-4 shooting. Credit goes to the Sonics perimeter players for crashing down and slapping away several passes intended for Mohammed in the lane.

Still on the bench for this series, Manu Ginobili (right) had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. But he was upstaged by teammate Glenn Robinson, who came off the bench to score 16 points on 5-for-8 shooting in only 14 minutes of action. More surprising, Robinson took a pair of charges. With Radmanovic out, Robert Horry may play a smaller role in this series as San Antonio goes big with Rasho Nesterovic and the twin towers attack instead. Sonics guard Antonio Daniels (left) was strong off the bench for the Sonics, scoring 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Collison was also very effective, coming up with nine points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes. Vitaly Potapenko and Damien Wilkins will become bigger pieces of the Sonics bench in Radmanovic's absence; they combined for nine points Sunday.
