SEATTLE - The Seattle SuperSonics today requested waivers on guards
Carl English and
David Young, Sonics General Manager Rick Sund announced.
English, 23, was signed by the Sonics as a free agent and invited to training camp on Oct. 4. A graduate of the University of Hawaii, English scored three points in five minutes in his only preseason action Wednesday against Portland.
English's chances of making the Sonics roster were hurt when the team signed Turkish guard Ibrahim Kutluay last month to fill its need for a shooter off the bench.
Young, 23, was the Sonics’ second-round selection (41st overall) in this year’s NBA Draft. The 6-5 guard spent his senior season at North Carolina Central, where he averaged 20.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game and was named to the All-CIAA team.
Young struggled during summer-league action, but had played better during training camp. Young saw 16 minutes of action against the Blazers, scoring seven points but committing three turnovers.
The Sonics roster now stands at 16. Three training-camp invitees - guard Mateen Cleaves and forwards Damien Wilkins and Galen Young - remain on the roster.
The Sonics will play their first preseason home game Saturday night at KeyArena against the Phoenix Suns.
