Seattle, July 19 - The Seattle SuperSonics today signed 6-4 guard
Antonio Daniels to a multi-year contract, Sonics General Manager Rick Sund announced. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We’re very excited that a player of Antonio’s caliber has decided to join the Sonics,” said Sund. “He’s a very efficient player who will add veteran leadership and depth to our backcourt. He can play both ends of the floor and, having been a member of an NBA Championship team, brings a tremendous level of experience with him to Seattle.”
Now entering his seventh NBA season, Daniels, 28, was originally drafted by the Vancouver Grizzlies in the first round (fourth pick overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft from Bowling Green State University.
“I’m extremely happy to add Antonio to this team,” Sonics Head Coach Nate McMillan said. “He can play both guard positions and I love him as a defender.”
Last season Daniels averaged 3.7 points, 1.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 13.0 minutes in 67 games with the Portland Trail Blazers. In 417 career NBA games, Daniels, a member of the 1998-99 NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs, has averaged 7.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 21.3 minutes.
The Columbus, Ohio native averaged 16.1 ppg, 2.9 rpg and 5.2 apg in four years at Bowling Green State University. As a senior, he was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and a John Wooden All-American Team finalist. Daniels received his degree in elementary education from BGSU.
