Blue Alliance Spotlight - Shirley Graham

How did you get started as a Blue Alliance Captain?

I am in sales, so I was always talking about the Thunder. When the Blue Alliance Captain (opportunity) came up, I had so many of my friends, family and even customers telling me I should apply … I was already hosting unofficial Thunder parties and started a Facebook page called “OKC Thunder Fans of Tulsa.” The day I received the email (naming me Tulsa’s Blue Alliance Captain), I was out of town on business and celebrated with total strangers.

What got you hooked on the Thunder?

I got started watching the Thunder as soon as they started. I watched them on television every time they were on. I have never been a big NBA fan, but I was so impressed with this young team, I got hooked. My husband and I always go somewhere warm for our wedding anniversary in January, but … January (2010), I told him I wanted to spend the money and go to see the Oklahoma City Thunder play ... We had a great time at the game, but also enjoyed downtown Oklahoma City. It was a great weekend. Since that time, we have gone to around 30-40 games.

How many members do you have in your Blue Alliance Chapter?

I have 169 members currently.

What’s been your favorite moment as a Blue Alliance Captain?

The watch parties I had during the playoffs, when I was not at the games, were so much fun. There was an average of 80 to 100 people at each party. I had two local televisions stations there one night … It was great.

What’s your top goal for the next year in the Blue Alliance?

I plan for next year to work more with the Tulsa 66ers and have more joint watch parties (with) other local captains … During the playoffs, (one) local TV station actually put a link on their website for people to join. I plan to have more stations do (that) next year, so that more people will find out about (the Blue Alliance).

How many pieces of Thunder gear do you own?

I am embarrassed, but two jerseys, one long-sleeve shirt and about 10-12 T-shirts, two baseball caps, (plus) the great stuff we got in our Captains’ package.
