Mr. Sensitive … The mood in the Sonics locker room after the Detroit game was so up-beat Fly nearly got caught in the cross fire of jabbin’ and towel slappin’. It was all smiles and laughs, that is, except for the NBA’s Nigerian nightmare
Olumide Oyedeji. Double-O's teammates got on his case for a play midway through the fourth quarter when the Pistons
Ben Wallace dunked right in his eye. Like fourth-graders on the playground, the Sonics were merely encouraged by Oyedeji’s disdain with their criticism (ahem).
Gary Payton and his sidekicks responded by leading the team in serenading Olumide with “Sensitivity” as the tune of choice. Dry your eyes, Olumide.
Extra reps … KeyArena's upper and lower bowls weren’t the only things packed before the Sacramento victory. The Sonics arena weight room was busting at the seams before tip-off with voluntary gym rats. As many as 10 Supes players snuck weight and cardio sessions in after shootaround and before pre-game warm-ups. None of the players showed any sign of fatigue and instead handed the Kings just their eighth loss of the season.
KeyArena Curse … Fly guesses the Key is built on a bed of kryptonite after 11 of the Supes 31 games have been against teams without their star players. The Kings minus C-Webb (injury), Magic without T-Mac (injury) and Grant Hill (injury), DisenFranchised (Steve) Houston (injury), Shaq-less Lakers (ref charging) and so on. Fly’s not on to anything earth-shattering here – local and national typewriter jockeys are all over the trend – but Fly doesn’t buy the coincidence theory. Even with the Key’s beefed up security, Fly figures no one has bothered to check Gary Payton’s shorts for the green jewel.
Holiday spirit … A trip to the Children’s Hospital was just what the doctor ordered for the Green backs. The Sonics were so inspired by the will and strength of the children they visited that a few broke into a rendition of “That Holiday Feeling” in the elevator. Vin Baker sang lead vocals with GP singing backup and Olumide Oyedeji providing the rhythm and harmony. Despite encouragement from the Supes trio, Fly and the audience of six or so didn’t join in, but enjoyed the entertainment.
Sixth and Seventh man … The Sonics record when Fly’s favorite fan in the 300-pound plus category struts his stuff for KeyArena patrons is a perfect 4-0. Squatch continues to sneak Ben Simon past Seattle Center ushers and onto the hardwood where he is cheered on by fans and, in some cases, even players – the NBA’s second most greasy player Scot Pollard (No. 2 behind only Rick Fox) gave Ben some love when the Kings visited. Not only do the Supes win when Simon entertains, they pound their opponents to the tune of a 19-point average margin of victory.
Overheard … Sonics funny-man Brent Barry was at it again last week. This time, though, he kicked a guy while he was down. Barry got a kick out of Vladimir Radmanovic’s dunk-turned disaster against the Pistons which landed the rookie on his head instead of his feet. With the Yugoslav import holding a ice pack to his achin’ noggin in the background, Bones joked, “Vladimir is just as screwed up as he was before he fell.”
