"Jerome was a pleasant surprise. We all spent a lot of time complaining about injuries, but injuries to Calvin and Vin allowed him to get on the court. We really brought him in as a project, but his development was accelerated because of injuries to those other big men. He responded pretty well, he's a big guy. He's got a long way to go but he likes it here and we hope to keep him in a Sonics uniform. "

Averaged 5.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.54 bpg and 16.9 mpg in 56 games...Started 40 games...Led the team in blocked shots (86)...Played a career-high 35 minutes at Portland on 3/30 and vs. New York on 4/5...Scored a career-high 18 points at Toronto on 2/24...Grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds at Toronto on 2/24...Blocked a career-high six shots at L.A. 2002 NBA Playoffs:
Game 5: Played four minutes.
Game 4: Scored two points, grabbed three rebounds, handed out one assist and blocked one shot in eight minutes.

Game 2: Scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked two shots in 19 minutes before fouling out.
Game 1: Started and scored four points, grabbed one rebound, handed out one assist and blocked two shots in 22 minutes...First career playoff game.

At his best ...
With 18 points and 12 rebounds, James helped the Sonics beat the Raptors 101-92 on Feb. 24, 2002. In 30 minutes James was a presence in the paint, allowing the Sonics backcourt to have open looks.
