Sonics rookie guard Luke Ridnour will have surgery on his severely pulled abdominal muscle, Sonics General Manager Rick Sund announced yesterday.

Ridnour, the Sonics 13th pick in this June’s Draft out of the University of Oregon, suffered the injury – as well as an avulsion fracture of his pelvic bone – while working out for the Milwaukee Bucks prior to the draft. He was able to continue working out for the Sonics, amongst other teams, but the diagnosis of the fracture kept Ridnour from participating in summer-league play.

Post-summer-league workouts caused Ridnour to aggravate the pulled muscle, necessitating surgery. It will be performed today in Philadelphia by Dr. William Meyers, a specialist at Drexel University’s College of Medicine.

Ridnour is expected to be kept out six to eight weeks following the surgery. “Hopefully not,” Sund told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer about whether Ridnour’s status for training camp would be affected, “but you never know for sure because it depends on recovering from surgery.”
