Director's Corner - Nov. 7, 2002
October was quite an exciting month for the Sonics Dance Team. The veteran members made the trip to Spokane on October 6 for the preseason game versus the Jazz and the rookies traveled to Yakima on the 19th for the Denver game. Both of these were great performance experiences as well as some team bonding time while traveling. The squad performed together on the KeyArena floor for the first time on October 14 along with special guest 8-year-old Olivia from the Storm Dance Troupe. They rounded out their preseason performances on October 20 at the Sacramento game. By then, the rookies were aware of the game night expectations and got rid of their jitters. While every game is important, preseason allowed the rookies to get a feel for the court and for game situations before opening night. The rest of the month was spent perfecting routines, finalizing game night “stuff” and making sure all costumes fit just right.
Opening Night went off without a hitch! The Sonics Dance Team looked awesome and performed even better. Their energetic hip-hop routines to Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You” and Usher’s “You Are the One” were huge hits with the crowd. As director, I could only sit back beaming with pride. Watching this team progress over the last couple of months has been truly amazing. Their incredibly flawless performances last night signify their coming together as a team and their unmistakable talent. With this first performance as an indication, I guarantee you’ll be blown away by the other phenomenal choreography you’ll see on the court this season.
As usual, the Dance Team was busy in the community at many promotional events. Some events that they participated in the month of October were: The Mama’s Hands Auction, KeyArena’s Open House, George Strait concert, Q-13 Morning Show, and The Buzz 100.7 morning show.
Continuing our monthly team outing, we decided to go roller-skating. This was quite fun and even better, no one was injured. We worked up quite an appetite after skating and enjoyed a late lunch at Red Robin. Our roller skating lessons will come in handy very soon…stay tuned.
