Mocking the Sonics Draft: Vol. III
June 24, 2004

SUPERSONICS.COM has scoured the internet to find the latest mock drafts from various NBA experts. On the day of the draft, there's still little more certainty about what direction the Sonics are going than there was a month ago. What are people saying? The most popular individual player seems to be Kirk Snyder, assuming the Sonics go for a perimeter player. If they go up front, Rafael Araujo and Pavel Podkolzine are the most popular. And if the Sonics decided to gamble on a prepster, both Al Jefferson and Josh Smith could be in the mix. But let's face facts - we won't really know what will happen until this afternoon.

Podkolzine
Gregg Doyel, CBSSportsline.com (Jun. 22)
12. Pavel Podkolzine, C, Russia

comment: The Sonics seem destined to draft a foreign center. Our guess: 7-foot-5 Russian Pavel Podkolzine, whose ceiling is almost as high as the top of his head.

Mike Kahn, CBSSportsline.com (Jun. 23)
12. Rafael Araujo, C, BYU

comment: A classic wide body, and he's got a nice shooting touch, where the Sonics need help badly.

Tony Mejia, CBSSportsline.com (May 27)
12. Andre Iguodala, G/F, Arizona

comment: The best player remaining on the board, this choice would intensify efforts to move either Ray Allen or Ronald Murray for a quality big man.

Snyder
Chris Monter, CNNSI.com (Jun. 22)
12. Kirk Snyder, F/G, Nevada

comment: Three of Seattle's top four scorers play in the backcourt, so adding frontcourt scoring is a priority. With last year's first-rounder, Nick Collison, expected back after a season-ending shoulder injury, power forward is not a big priority. The Sonics could use a center to beef up last year's three-headed monster of Vitaly Potapenko, Calvin Booth and Jerome James, who combined for a mere 17.0 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. An athletic forward like Josh Smith is another possibility. The Sonics took Oregon teammate Luke Ridnour last year and might also grab (Luke) Jackson, who is perhaps the top shooter in the draft. However, his strong workouts might move him up in the draft. Snyder tested as the second-best athlete in Chicago and many believe he has a first-round guarantee. This might be the spot for him.

Smith
Dime Magazine (Jun. 24)
12. Josh Smith, F/G, Oak Hill Academy

comment: And finally the insanity ends. The entire state of Washington is giddy right now. Smith can jump out of the gym and has all-star talent, and after slipping to pick 12 he'll have all-star motivation.

DraftCity.com (Jun. 5)
12. Pavel Podkolzine, C, Russia
36. Delonte West, PG, Temple
42. Andre Emmett, SG, Texas Tech

comment: The million dollar question. Barring another setback like his Pituitary gland removal last summer, It's hard to see Pavel falling out of the top 10 because of his incredible potential. But still, there are lots of questions left to be answered about him … Emmett is one of those fantastic college players whose game does not translate very well to the pros.

Biedrins
Chad Ford, ESPN Insider (Jun. 18)
12. Andris Biedrins, PF, Latvia

comment: Biedrins may be slipping a little bit. He could go as high as Washington at no. 5 or to the Raptors at no. 8, but it's tough to believe he'd slip past Seattle here. Biedrins is tall, athletic, plays tough defense and is more ready to play than most Euros. He's also better than any of the three centers in Seattle.

HoopsHype.com (Jun. 24)
12. Rafael Araujo, C, BYU

comment: The best center in college basketball behind Emeka Okafor. Doesn't have Okafor's athleticism, but plays with the same passion.

Steve Kyler Hoopsworld.com (Jun. 24)
12. Kirk Snyder, F/G, Nevada

Nelson
NBADraft.net (Jun. 24)
12. Jameer Nelson, PG, St. Joe's
36. Jackson Vroman, PF, Iowa State
42. Michel Morandais, SG, Colorado

Ray Glier, NBCSports.com (Jun. 24)
12. Josh Smith, SF, Oak Hill Academy

comment: Forget need. The best player available is this 6-foot-8 jumper who needs seasoning, but will be an all-star in time.

Percy Allen, Seattle Times
12. Kirk Snyder, F/G, Nevada

comment: Don't be surprised if they trade this pick to the Jazz for two of Utah's three first-round picks (Nos. 14, 16, 21). Snyder, with an NBA-ready body, would be a gift for coach Nate McMillan.

Childress
Sean Deveney, Sporting News
12. Josh Childress, SF, Stanford

comment: Childress is a smart, gifted player with long arms and a nice shooting touch.

Frank Hughes, The News Tribune
12. Al Jefferson, PF, Prentiss H.S.

comment: This is one of five or six players the Supes could take.
