  • Subjects Taught: 9th-12th AP Calculus, Algebra, and Pre-AP Algebra
  • Why did you go into teaching?: I went into secondary education because it allows me to work with creative, energetic, sometimes challenging, but always interesting teenagers. They keep you on your toes, but nothing is more rewarding than having a young person tell you how much they appreciate what you’ve done to help them learn.
  • Most influential person in your career: I have had great teachers and worked with great teachers, but Mary Hobson Smith has probably had the most lasting effect on me as an educator. She always made our 1st/2nd grade class something magical. We didn’t just learn about things, we “experienced” them and she always seemed to be more excited about our new discoveries than even we were. I strive to bring the same magic to my own classroom by constantly looking for different or unusual ways to bring mathematics to life for my students - celebrating each new discovery as we go along.
  • Who is your favorite Thunder Player?: Kevin Durant.
  • What word of advice would you give to young Thunder Fans in regards to the importance of education?: There is nothing more important than establishing a solid educational and ethical foundation so that when you head out into the world, you have a great base to build upon. Too many people go through “so-so” jobs before they get to their dream job. I have my dream job!
  • Most influential person in your career: There are, quite frankly, too many outstanding teachers and administrators in our district to name just one influential person, as they have all been instrumental in welcoming me into the “Shawnee Public Schools” family and guiding me through my first years of teaching. My parents are the most influential people in my life as they are both still in education, dad a principal, and mom a shadow assistant. They support me through everything and offer advice, regardless of how brutally honest. I credit them for keeping me grounded. My principal two years ago gave me opportunities to travel and that experience is appreciated more than she realizes! The collaboration I witnessed and participated in is invaluable and will be useful to me until the day I retire.
  • Who is your favorite Thunder Player?: Despite being a loyal Sooner fan, I have close friends who are from Lawrence. I have spent a good deal of time talking about the history and tradition of KU basketball. At great expense to my pride, I even allowed a friend to take my picture next to a Jayhawk on the KU campus. • Most influential person in your career: I cannot name one person, but I have definitely been influenced. When I joined the staff at Whittier Middle School, I was given so many opportunities for professional development and mentored by many outstanding educators on my team. So, I would have to give the credit to my administration and peers. Talk about team effort!
  • Who is your favorite Thunder Player?: Kevin Durant
  • What word of advice would you give to young Thunder Fans in regards to the importance of education?: Being a well-rounded and educated person makes life so much easier. Thunder vs Kings
    March 2, 2010

  • Education: University of Oklahoma
  • School: Mustang Mid-High
  • Years of Experience: 14 years
  • Subjects Taught: 9th Grade Geometry
  • Why did you go into teaching?: Despite my educational lineage (my father and mother are both educators), I have never believed I consciously chose teaching as a profession. Instead, I think education chose me. For me, helping people understand concepts was an activity I enjoyed and fortunately was successful at, so why not do something you enjoy for your profession.
  • Most influential person in your career: I believe I have had the fortune of being taught by some of the best teachers in the state of Oklahoma as well as the nation, but the most influential people in my career have been my parents, both of whom are English teachers. Their passion for their careers and the rewards of being an integral part of the development of so many young minds over the years provided me insight on the fulfillment the education profession can provide for a person.
  • Who is your favorite Thunder Player?: As common as an answer as it is for Oklahoma City fans, my favorite player is Kevin Durant. He is an all All-Star player, a positive role model, and a winner. He never has excuses for his play (and seldom needs them), but always strives to make himself and his team better each time he sets foot on the court.
  • What word of advice would you give to young Thunder Fans in regards to the importance of education?: Be demanding of yourself, your peers, and your teachers. Never settle to be average, continue to raise the bar, learn more, and challenge yourself. Books are magic carpet rides! As a teaching librarian I can invite the students to hop on board. They can begin their excitement of reading by learning about the people who write and illustrate books as well as become familiar with the library. I want them become life long readers.
  • Most influential person in your career: Katherine I. Daily. She was my sons’ principal. She hired me as an assistant and realized that I had a Library Science minor and encouraged me to get my masters. She passed away before I finished but I know how proud she is of me.
  • Who is your favorite Thunder Player?: Nick Collison. I really appreciate the way he has become involved in Oklahoma with his community service. I would love for him to read to the students of Katherine I. Daily…hint…hint!
  • What word of advice would you give to young Thunder Fans in regards to the importance of education?: Never give up on yourself. As with basketball, you develop your skills with practice. You will score in life if you can read.
