Several Seattle SuperSonics players and coaches took part Thursday in the team's efforts to collect money and supplies for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, Mikki Moore and Luke Ridnour, amongst others, joined Sonics and Storm staff to collect at The Furtado Center. Sonics Coach Bob Weiss and Storm counterpart Anne Donovan also pitched in.

"It's a good feeling, just to know you can take care of your community after the natural disaster that happened in New Orleans," said Lewis. "I was part of the charity game they had in Houston, and it was a real good turnout. A lot of people lost their families, so just to see those kids and put a smile on their face was good. We're doing this for them."

"Our team is great at this sort of thing," said Weiss. "They attack this enthusiastically. It's the type of thing they do on their own."

This week's collection drive by the Sonics and Storm, which also pledged $75,000 in cash and supplies, is just the latest assistance to the relief effort. Lewis played in the aforemtioned Hurricane Relief Game at the Toyota Center on September 11. Each of the 30 or so players who participated donated at least $10,000. Allen appeared on Wheel of Fortune's NBA Week, with proceeds going to Katrina victims.

Lewis, a native of Houston, is now dealing with the possibility of Hurricane Rita causing damage to his hometown, displacing evacuees who took shelter in Houston.

"We had over 200,000 of those people in Houston," said Lewis. "Now they have to leave Houston and go somewhere else for a couple of days until this hurricane passes over.

"My family just got here this morning. They evacuated Houston, told people they need to get out of Houston. My immediate family got here this morning. I also still have a lot of family in the area. I sent a lot of money to them; they're trying to drive to North Louisiana, get as far away as possible until they can get back."
