Katie Lawson: January, 2011

Late on an August night last year, officer Lawson responded to assist a County Deputy on a DUI stop, which occurred outside the suspect’s home in northwest Oklahoma City. It seemed routine, until Lawson spotted the barrel of a high-powered AR-15 semi automatic rifle aimed at her, just 60 feet away. With only her .45 caliber pistol, she was severely outgunned as the shooter moved even closer and opened fire….sending 26 rounds towards her patrol car, hitting her six times. Wounded and bloody, Lawson was still able to return fire and force the gunman to retreat and stop shooting. Lawson attempted to chase the suspect but was unable because of her injuries. She was however able to calmly get on her radio to give a description and possible location of the suspect for fellow officers. Her ability to think and act quickly along with her strength, faith and training helped Officer Lawson survive the attack. She continues to recover and looks forward to returning to full duty as soon as possible.
