BELINDA LECHTENBERG: February, 2010

Belinda Lechtenberg and other volunteers from Cherokee Hills Christian church flew into Port-au-Prince in late January to help with earthquake relief and track down two orphans she and her husband were in the process of adopting.

While in Haiti, she assisted with critical care of earthquake victims. She then made it her mission to find the 2 children she and her husband were adopting. Along the way, they found ten other children whose adoptions were expedited. With the help of Oklahoma state and federal officials, they made it out of Haiti aboard an Air Force plane, with a total of 12 orphans, all coming to the United States to be adopted.

She arrived at Will Rogers World Airport to a hero’s welcome as she held her new son and led the rest of the Haitians into the arms of their new families at the airport. The tears of despair in Haiti turned to tears of joy in Oklahoma City as the youngest of the Haiti victims were about to begin their new lives.
