Max Yardley: February 24th, 2009
February’s Thunder Community Hero Award, presented by Devon Energy, was given to Max Yardley. The 16-year-old Eagle Scout was with his father walking through an Edmond neighborhood the night of the February 9 tornado. They were searching to make sure all residents were accounted for. As they walked, Max heard the faint sound of knocking coming from beneath the twisted tree limbs and other debris. The sound came from inside an underground storm shelter where Lisa Hiltgen was trapped and using a hammer on the inside of the door to let someone know she was in there. The sound led Max to the shelter. He lifted the limbs and opened the door to let Lisa out to safety. It was Max’s good ears and alertness that earned him the February Thunder Community Hero Award presented by Devon Energy.
