13-year old J. Marcum knows what she wants for her birthday: to make other people feel good. The seventh grader from Whittier Middle School in Norman says she has everything SHE needs, so for her birthdays the past 3 years she has asked her friends to give stuffed animals, toys and books to go to children in need. This year as she turned 13, she and her friends came through in big numbers…giving more than 300 books to children in the hospital through the University of Oklahoma Children’s Physicians Building Clinics and the Reach Out and Read Program. It was the Third Annual J. Marcum Philanthropic Birthday Celebration. Her friends are even picking up on the generosity, telling J. they want to follow her lead and have similar birthday giving efforts. J. says “We are a lucky family and we don’t have a lot of health problems so I decided to give back to children who need help more than me.”
