Before that, he served as director of integrated sales and marketing at Starwave's and Disney's ABC/ESPN Internet Ventures, working across the companies' Internet, television, radio, and print properties. He started his career by co-founding and running a newspaper based in Boston, before joining IDG to launch their first consumer Internet magazine, I-Way.

Media Magazine named Armstrong to its "Media 100" list of the top people in global media, and Advertising Age magazine gave him a "Media Maven" award in 2004. He sits on the boards of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), KnowledgeStorm Inc. and Associated Content Inc.
