Detroit Pistons, Quicken Loans and Fathead Award $20,000 in College Scholarships in Celebration of Black History Month
Students from Detroit Pershing, Flint Northern, Highland Park, Hamtramck and Pontiac high schools will perform a three-minute interpretation on “Michigan Black History, Taking Our Issues to the Source” in the art form of their choice to compete for scholarships, sponsored by Quicken Loans, Fathead and the Detroit Pistons. The scholarships range from $2,500 to $10,000. Following the event, students will enjoy a fresh, handmade Italian lunch courtesy of Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Sterling Heights.
Students also receive a Pistons Fathead wall graphic, a $25 gift certificate to Carrabba's Italian Grill and tickets to the February 29th Pistons game at The Palace of Auburn Hills, where they will be recognized in-arena with a special presentation. One Michigan student will be awarded a $2,500 online scholarship and receive in-arena recognition based on a one page essay also on “Michigan Black History, Taking Our Issues to the Source.”
"I am looking forward to concluding Black History month with this year’s event,” said Mahorn, a graduate of Hampton Institute, which is now known as Hampton University. “This educational event allows students to creatively express who they are, what they have learned about black history and how they can use it for their future endeavors."
Joining Mahorn and McInnis as event panelists are several distinguished community members including: Charlie Metzger, Palace Sports & Entertainment Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer; Wendy Kemp, Quicken Loans Director of Community Relations; Anqunette Jamison, WJBK-TV Fox 2 anchorwoman; Sharon McClendon, WMYD-TV Channel 20 Director of Community Affairs; Dr. Darrius, WJLB radio personality; Thomas Costello, Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion; Earl Cureton, Detroit Pistons Legend; Patrina Chatman, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History Curator of Exhibitions; and Camille Richardson, Marketing Manager of Carrabba's Italian Grill.
