2005 Summer Basketball Camps

LEARN THE FUNDAMENTALS WITH THE NUGGETS THIS SUMMER


Although most players prefer to spend time away from basketball during the offseason, the Nuggets enjoy giving back to the community by holding summer basketball camps across the country. Here in Denver, there will be a number of camps to choose from throughout the summer for all ages and basketball abilities. There will be camps hosted by different Nuggets players, while there will be the official Denver Nuggets Basketball Camps as well.

Here's a look at the Nuggets-related basketball camps to take place this summer in the Denver metro area:

CARMELO ANTHONY YOUTH BASKETBALL CAMP

  • Dates: August 1 – 4, 2005

    NBA star Carmelo Anthony will host the inaugural Carmelo Anthony Youth Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 8 - 18 in Lakewood, Colorado, from August 1 – 4 this summer. Camp Melo, which will be held at the Gold Crown Field House, will feature four half-day sessions of basketball instruction.

    Anthony will be on site daily to interact with campers and assist with games and drills. The camp will also feature instruction from top prep and collegiate coaches from the Denver area. Campers ages 8 - 12 will participate from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon, while campers ages 13 - 18 will participate from 12:45 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. Campers will receive 14 hours of expert instruction during the week, an official camp basketball, camp T-shirt, team photo with Carmelo, two tickets to a Nuggets pre-season game, and the opportunity to win contests and prizes as well as daily interaction with Carmelo Anthony. Additionally, Carmelo is donating scholarships to underserved children in the Denver area to attend the camp at no cost to them.

    Camp Melo is designed to instill in all campers the importance of hard work, dedication, teamwork and fair play with an emphasis on basic fundamentals of individual skill development including ball handling and dribbling, defense, individual and team, passing, shooting, shot selection, agility and rebounding. Each day, the campers will experience various stations, specializing in fundamental skills, sportsmanship, and the team concept of basketball. Groups will be small to assure that each camper gets maximum personalized instruction. The camp is intended to enhance confidence and basketball mechanics for all campers.

    EARL BOYKINS' BASKETBALL SKILLS CAMP

  • Dates: June 30 – July 2, 2005
  • Location: Washington Park Recreation Center, Denver, CO
  • Times: 9:00 – 10:30 am (Grades 3-6); 10:30 am – 12:30 pm (Grades 7-9)

    Earl Boykins is one of the Denver Nuggets most popular players. An All-American in college at Eastern Michigan, Boykins was second in the nation in scoring his senior year when he finished with a 25.7 ppg average. Since working his way into the NBA as an undrafted free agent in 1998, Boykins has imporved as a player every single season in the league. Earl's high energy game has earned him recognition as one of the top sixth men in the entire NBA, as well as the Nuggets go to player off of the bench.

    The Earl Boykins Basketball Skills Camp will be directed by Barry Hecker, an assistant coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. Hecker is a veteran when it comes to summer basketball camps, having directed camps for NBA players such as Adrian Dantley, Mugsy Bogues, Xavier McDaniel and Robert Horry. Hecker has also directed basketball camps for NBA head coaches as well, including former Orlando Magic head coach Johnny Davis and former Golden State Warriors head coach Eric Mussellman.

    Boykins' camp will be broken into two separate sessions. The first session will take place from 9:00 until 10:30 am and is designed for boys and girls in grades three through six. The second session will take place from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm and is designed for boys and girls in grades seven through nine. Both sessions will focus on fundamental skill development of shooting, dribbling, footwork and passing, as well as many other facets of the game. All camp participants must have a Denver Parks and Recreation membership card.

    Participants in the Earl Boykins Basketball Skills Camp will receive a number of great benefits for the hard work and dedication. In addition to learning the fundamentals of basketball from the highly experienced coaching staff, participants will receive a camp T-shirt and an autographed picture with Earl Boykins. Most importantly, each and every child will receive a positive basketball experience at the Washington Park Recreation Center.

    GREG BUCKNER'S G.B.U.C.K. BASKETBALL CAMP

    The G.B.U.C.K. (Giving Back an Unconditional Commitment to Kids) Basketball Camp is designed to teach basketball fundamentals and to demonstrate how the game of basketball can be a positive influence on your life. Emphasis will be placed on team attitudes and positive reinforcement. Time will be spent on reinforcing the importance of academics and what being a good role model means. Basketball is fun, and this camp is designed to be fun and teach at the same time. The staff at the G.B.U.C.K. Basketball Camp promises to work their hardest to help you become a better player and a better person.

    The camp will be sponsored and hosted by Greg Buckner of the Denver Nuggets, along with different coaches. Buckner, who was a four-year standout at Clemson University, has decided to extend his reach to touch the children of Denver, Colorado. The G.B.U.C.K. Basketball Camp is his special way of giving back to the Denver community that has embraced him so well.

    The G.B.U.C.K. Camp is designed for entry level boys and girls (ages six and up). The camp will last all day and will include a provided lunch for the campers. The fundamentals of basketball will be taught through drills, contests and games. There will also be full court competition in the camp on a daily basis. In addition to individual evaluations and professional instruction, all campers will receive a camp T-shirt and autographs and pictures with Greg Buckner and the other NBA special guests.

    2005 DENVER NUGGETS / BILL HANZLIK BASKETBALL CAMP

    The Denver Nuggets/Bill Hanzlik Basketball Camp is one of the premier summer basketball camps held in the Denver metro area. The daily schedule is fast paced with approximately one hour of fundamentals and drills, 30 minutes of contests for prizes and 90 minutes of games in a league format, with a short break each day. There are a variety of different sessions for all ages within the two scheduled camps:

    July 11th – 15th July 18th – 22nd
  • 9:00 – 11:30 am (2nd - 4th Grade Co-Ed)
  • 1:00 – 4:00 pm (4th - 6th Grade Boys)
  • 5:00 – 8:00 pm (7th - 10th Grade Boys)
  • 9:00 – 11:30 am (2nd - 4th Grade Co-Ed)
  • 1:00 – 4:00 pm (4th - 7th Grade Girls)
  • 5:00 – 8:00 pm (7th - 12th Grade Girls)
  • For the older camps, the staff consists of great varsity-level high school coaches and varsity-level college players. There is a great coach-to-camper ratio of one coach for each eight campers. The staff has over 250 years of combined coaching and playing experience at or above the high school varsity level! The new Co-Ed camps for younger players will also have great staffs of local hoops experts.

    All camps will be held at the new Gold Crown Field House, located at 150 S. Harlan St. in Lakewood. The great new air-conditioned facility has 28 retractable basketball hoops and a performance wood floor big enough for 10 full-court camp games at once! Each and every camp session will be hosted by Bill Hanzlik, a local sports celebrity. In his nine seasons as a player with the Denver Nuggets, Hanzlik made the NBA Playoffs seven times and won the Midwest Division Championship twice. After retiring as a player in 1991, Hanzlik became an Assistant Coach with the Charlotte Hornets and the Atlanta Hawks before serving as the Nuggets' Head Coach in 1997-98. He now serves as the full-time Co-Founder and CEO of the Gold Crown Foundation in Denver and is the Color Analyst for Denver Nuggets TV broadcasts. He was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 for his playing career and contributions to the Colorado sports community.

    In addition to the fundamental basketball instruction, campers will have the opportunity to play in league-style full court competition. The coaches will place players on teams based on height and ability to help balance competition. All campers at the Bill Hanzlik/Denver Nuggets Basketball Camps will receive a Camp T-shirt the first day of camp. Campers can also win prizes including T-shirts, hats and school supplies. (Each camper will win at least one prize during the week from our prize closet.) Campers will also be given the chance to participate in our voluntary "Free Throw Pledge Contest" and shoot free throws, collect pledges and win prizes. Proceeds help others through the Gold Crown Foundation.
