Karl's coaching influence felt throughout the NBA

George Karl: 1,000 Victories


With 1,000 career regular-season wins and 19 playoff appearances in 23 seasons, George Karl is one of the most accomplished coaches in NBA history, but his contributions and influence extend beyond the wins and losses.

As someone who learned from coaching greats Dean Smith, Larry Brown and Doug Moe, Karl takes pride in providing experience and opportunities for other coaches as well. Two of the past four NBA Coach of the Year recipients – Scott Brooks and Sam Mitchell – worked as assistants under Karl.

Here is a look at current and former NBA head coaches and assistant coaches who once played for Karl or were members of his coaching staff:

HEAD COACHES

Scott Brooks, Oklahoma City Thunder: Worked as an assistant under Karl in Denver from 2005-06. NBA Coach of the Year in 2009-10.

Nate McMilllan, Portland Trail Blazers: Played for Karl in Seattle from 1992-98. He also coached the Sonics from 2000-05.

Vinny Del Negro, head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers: Played for Karl in Milwaukee from 1998-2000. He also was head coach for Chicago from 2008-10.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Ron Adams, assistant coach, Chicago Bulls: Worked as an assistant under Karl in Milwaukee from 1998-2003.

Dwane Casey, assistant coach, Dallas Mavericks: Worked an an assistant under Karl in Seattle from 1994-98. He also was head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2005-07.

Sam Cassell, assistant coach, Washington Wizards: Played for Karl in Mlwaukee from 1998-2003 and helped lead Bucks to the 2001 Eastern Conference finals.

Rex Kalamian, assistant coach, Oklahoma City Thunder: Worked as an assistant under Karl in Denver in 2005.

Sam Mitchell, assistant coach, New Jersey Nets: Worked as an assistant under Karl in Milwaukee in 2002-03. He also was head coach of the Toronto Raptors from 2004-08 and was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2006-07.

Jamahl Mosley, assistant coach, Cleveland Cavaliers: Worked as an assistant under Karl in Denver from 2006-10.

Don Newman, assistant coach, San Antonio Spurs: Worked as an assistant under Karl in Milwaukee from 1999-2003.

Terry Stotts, assistant coach, Dallas Mavericks: Worked as an assistant under Karl in Seattle and Milwaukee from 1992-2002. He later served as Milwaukee's head coach from 2005-07.

FORMER COACHES

Doug Moe, former head coach in San Antonio (1976-80), Denver (1980-90) and Philadelphia (1992-93): Worked as an assistant and provided comic under Karl from 2005-08.

Mike Woodson, former head coach of the Atlanta Hawks (2004-10): Worked as an assistant under Karl in Milwaukee in 1998-99.

Bob Weiss, former head coach Atlanta, Los Angeles Clippers, Seattle, San Antonio: Worked as an assistant under Karl in Seattle from 1994-98.
